Well, I finally got around to reading The Jungle. What an amazing book. There were parts of that shit that made me cry (not that that's hard to do, I'm a fucking crybaby). I had no idea the degree of oppression these men were under back then. If you consider yourself a leftist, please do yourself a favor and read this book. It will re-enforce your beliefs tenfold.

I've read passages from that book that, in very graphic detail, made it seem that physical maiming was common in the meat-packing industry near the turn of the century. Very moving shit.
Looks pretty good.

Urban.

What is the main plot to the book? I love a good story, just I've never heard of that one.

Also, who is the author?

Upton Sinclair (a committed Socialist) is the author, the book is set in 1904. The story is about a Lithuanian family that comes to Chicago because they have heard how much American workers make. What they didn't know is that everything is more expensive here. So they are forced to find factory jobs in the stockyards. A good portion of the book is devoted to exposing the horrible conditions for workers in the industry, as well as the unsanitary way in which the beef is produced. The parts describing the stockyards are nothing short of amazing. It was so powerful that it convinced Teddy Rosevelt to change the laws to make meat production more sanitary. I can't really describe the rest of it, it's basically just one tradgedy after the other for the family. I read alot, and I am dead serious when I say it's one of the most amazing, thought provoking and emotional books I've ever read. It's a pretty short read, I finished it in a few days. It has a Socialist theme throughout the whole book.

I'm rambling, maybe it's because I'm slightly drunk. I also have a hard time summarzing books and movies that I really enjoyed. Just read the book, you won't regret it.
