I'm pretty new to creating smartphones apps, and I'm looking for a new project. But, I'd prefer the project be useful, and not just another "Dating App" or "Find Restaurants Near Me." I was hoping some people here might have had some ideas of phone apps that would be useful, especially since I'd prefer anything I make be particularly useful to members of the left and working class.
Everything below is slightly technical exposition on my programming abilities, so if you know very little about programming or app development, feel free to reply without reading the rest.
I have some coding experience, but not particularly in any language that readily lends itself well to app development (at least to my knowledge). Mostly, I've used Python, Ruby, and Prolog, with just enough C++ and VBA/VB.NET knowledge to EVENTUALLY make a simple program work. That being said, I'm currently working on app development with MIT's App Inventor, which simultaneously makes it easy to make pretty cool apps and limits the functionality of said apps. So, if anyone feels like also suggesting a different environment for app development, ideally Python or Ruby based, I would also appreciate those suggestions.
