Forgive me if this is posted in an inappropriate subforum. The state I live in got back into the killing business today. I find it incredibly disheartening that not only does the government have the power of life and death over us all, it seems that not a single person I know gives a single solitary rat's ass. Death Row advocates like to lie and say that death sentences can only be imposed by juries but the truth is that there are several states where a judge can impose sentence, as well as widespread jury coercion, as well as the fact that it often comes down to the ruling of the supreme court (as well as other courts consisting of judges appointed for life)...the state makes the call. While in this case the victim was not a person of color, the sad reality is that people of color are disproportionally lynched by the state and it continues and no one is doing jack shit to stop it. I get that the act the guy did was heinous. But had the victim of that act not been a white child, would he still have been executed? When the state murders someone, it's usually for the "crime" of killing a white child, white woman, or a cop.
How many people can think of someone to whom they would entrust the power of life and death over everyone? And yet it's entrusted to "juries" and judges and no one seems to mind. Even when they've it gotten wrong time and time again. The guy was 19 years old when he did that horrible act. The man they killed was 43. I'm 35 now and I am nowhere near the person I was at 19. The person that committed that terrible act probably didn't even exist anymore.
