Adalah-NY: The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel

Dear Chris,

Join 88 theater artists, including winners of four Pulitzers, three Tonys, and nine Obies, in opposing Israeli government-sponsored performances by Israel’s Ha’Bima and Cameri theater companies at Lincoln Center this week!

As the theater artists stated in a July 5 letter to Lincoln Center (https://adalahny.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=7442&qid=609856), "It is deeply troubling that Lincoln Center, one of the world’s leading cultural institutions, is helping the Israeli government to implement its systematic 'Brand Israel' strategy of employing arts and culture to divert attention from the state's decades of violent colonization, brutal military occupation and denial of basic rights to the Palestinian people. We call on Lincoln Center to avoid complicity...by cancelling these performances."

The letter to Lincoln Center has generated debate and widespread media coverage in outlets including The New York Times (https://adalahny.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=7443&qid=609856), Gothamist (https://adalahny.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=7444&qid=609856), Playbill (https://adalahny.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=7445&qid=609856), and The Jewish Daily Forward (https://adalahny.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=7446&qid=609856). The Ha’Bima and Cameri theater companies' performances at Lincoln Center are sponsored by the Israeli government as part of the "Brand Israel" campaign. In addition, both groups have long been actively complicit in the occupation and colonization of the West Bank by repeatedly performing in illegal settlements, despite past opposition from artists, including some of their own actors.

Lincoln Center President Debora Spar defended the performances by writing that "we do not make political statements and hope that the art we present can stand on its own." But hosting two complicit theater companies and receiving Israeli government funding to do so is a political statement.

The time has come for cultural workers and cultural institutions around the world to end their complicity with the Israeli occupation, colonization, and apartheid regime. Hosting performances that are sponsored by the Israeli government and carried out by complicit Israeli institutions is tantamount to supporting the heightened Israeli government repression of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation in the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

Despite attempts by many to silence the BDS movement, including revelations that 43 U.S. senators (https://adalahny.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=7449&qid=609856) hope to implement a law that could make it a felony for Americans to support boycotts against Israel, the global movement continues to grow.

Be a part of the growing movement for cultural boycott against Israel until it complies with international law and upholds Palestinian human rights!

That is absolutely horrifying.
