la plata was the rebel's key command center after moving from la mesa. basically it was their last line of defense from the army offensive. the rebels held off the army troops and thus it became thier first true victory

i think this what happened correct me if im wrong

What Che is talking about here, in the first victory sense, is when they attacked a small army garrison near the La Plata river in the Sierra Maestra mountains. It wasn't a huge military victory. You should read up about it, the tale is somewhat amusing, one of the henchman for Batista Chicho Osorio came by drunk and Fidel asked why he had not eliminated the rebels yet, with Chico being so drunk he couldn't tell it was Fidel. Fidel then found out through him, who was friendly and unfriendly to his forces in the area and also asked what he would do if he caught Fidel Castro , to which he replied " "We'll have to cut his dick off". Fidel convinced him that he was an officer in the army coming to check up on efficiency, Chico then led Fidel and his forces right to the La Plata barracks.

If they had lost the battle, they would have been out of ammunition, so it was important in that sense, they overtook the barracks using 500 rounds of ammunition, which allowed them to receive many different weapons, ammunition and other supplies. It was also important in a psychological sense, as Che has pointed out, it showed that final victory could be achieved, it was there first military victory , which was a huge moral boost for all the men. So it's importance can never be underestimated, even if it was only a small army garrison , it was very important in the early stages of the war.

Hope that helped you out :)
