This July 26th to 29th, Critical Resistance will be joining former prisoners, advocates, scholars, and abolitionist organizers from across the U.S. and around the world for the International Conference on Penal Abolition (ICOPA) (http://criticalresistance.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=25f085e9d9&e=f269152a76). Held since 1983, the conference has served as an important space for people fighting the prison industrial complex to learn, share, and discuss abolitionist analysis and strategy. CR has participated for years and we are looking forward to ICOPA '17. This year, the theme is “Abolition and its Ghosts: Historic Memory and Ongoing Struggles Against Colonialism and Slavery,” and will take place at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Bristol Community College. It is being hosted and organized by the Department of Crime and Justice Studies at UMass Dartmouth and the Young Abolitionists in Boston.

Below are the three main ways that CR will be contributing to ICOPA this year. We hope that you join us and this year's ICOPA organizers by participating (http://criticalresistance.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=282738008f&e=f269152a76) or making a donation (http://criticalresistance.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=06ec408d30&e=f269152a76) to support.

Abolition of Policing Workshop

CR will be presenting our “Abolition of Policing” workshop, which was developed during our participation in the successful fight against gang injunctions in Oakland, CA. It will be presented in a Training-for-Trainers style, with the goal of giving participants all of the tools, resources, and materials they would need to facilitate this workshop for their community or organization. Be sure to check out our workshop to get trained up in its facilitation. We'll also be posting all the resources we've developed for this workshop, so email us if you'd like to receive them.

Amplifying Prisoners' Voices

We will have some of our most recent prisoner correspondence projects on display, which help to guide, inform, and deepen our work for abolition and to overcome the state's attempts to quell inside/outside organizing. We'll be featuring prisoners' analysis (http://criticalresistance.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=cc01335701&e=f269152a76) on topics such as state repression and the Trump administration, reports on impacts of imprisonment in New York State and Los Angeles County, and our political education project that shares reading reflections inside and outside prison walls. You'll also have an opportunity to correspond with some of CR's imprisoned writer comrades.

Breaking Down the Prison Industrial Complex Video Project

We are excited to premier the first feature videos from Breaking Down the Prison Industrial Complex, our new film project (http://criticalresistance.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=b8fab4c62e&e=f269152a76) that explores the current state of the prison industrial complex and how people are fighting back to resist and abolish it. After ICOPA, videos will be available free online for public education and organizing purposes. Email jess [at] criticalresistance [dot] org if you want to sponsor a screening in your community!
