While the Commander in Chief is in Europe promoting "America First," and in the spirit of putting humanity first, some thinking on North Korea:
Many people are rightfully very concerned about the threat of nuclear war with North Korea. As it has become more clear that diplomatic conversations are unlikely and "lack of options" becomes the dominate narrative in the news; it is imperative that all those who believe that the people of every country are full human beings deepen their understanding. Let's be clear about the real dangers posed by this conflict, who the real aggressor is, and the disaster any escalation from the U.S. would bring for all of humanity and the planet.
Revolution Newspaper/revcom.us recently published the transcript of a June 9, 2017 interview with author and history professor Bruce Cumings on The Michael Slate Show on KPFK Pacifica radio. Bruce Cumings' interview exposes the long history of U.S. war, threats and intervention against North Korea and challenges us to throw off the “America First” narrative:
“If you imagine North Korea as the Green Team against the Blue Team, rather than the Evil Kim Jong-un with his crazy haircut against the always-perfect United States, you can see what they’re up against. It’s a small country, and the largest power in the world is constantly threatening it with nuclear annihilation. President Obama did this too. He routinely sent nuclear-capable B1 and B2 bombers over South Korea for exercises. So it’s a very dangerous situation, and I think it’s incumbent on Americans to put themselves in the shoes of the North Koreans and look at the world that they face, quite apart from all of our media stereotypes about how crazy they are, and how dangerous they are.”

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, interviewed Christine Ahn, the founder and international coordinator of Women Cross DMZ, a global movement of women mobilizing for peace in Korea. In the interview Ms. Ahn focuses on the centrality of preemptive war to any discussion about North Korea and the United States:
“North Korea tests these missiles as a way to advance their capability to defend in the case of any kind of preemptive strike from the United States. And, you know, we don’t know if they could put a nuclear warhead on one of these that could reach the United States, but that’s the point - they want to put the pressure on the United States, on the Trump administration, to say, 'We need to negotiate some kind of peace settlement,' because they feel threatened….And, you know, when the Bush administration came into office, we have to remember, it was the preemptive doctrine that really set off for North Koreans, you know, seeing what happened in Iraq, seeing what happened in Afghanistan, and Libya, subsequently, that they had to do what they had to do to defend their country. And, unfortunately, pursuing nuclear weapons and now having some kind of delivery capability, through this long-range missile, to strike the United States is one way to get the United States to come to some kind of negotiating table. Steven Bradbury 'Just Following Orders'? Or Working an Illegitimate System for Fame and Fortune?
From 2005-2009, Steven G. Bradbury was acting head of the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel under George Bush. During this time he authored the "torture memos" that contradict domestic and international law regarding the treatment of prisoners. In 2008, Bradbury was blocked from holding Senate-confirmable positions due to his role in Bush's torture program. Then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) used procedural maneuvers to prevent Bradbury's nomination to a senior Justice Department position. With President Trump, he has resurfaced in vying for a key government position. - Veterans for Peace

Last Wednesday, members of Veterans for Peace interrupted the Senate confirmation hearing for Mr. Bradbury (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=7pw6owvxqVzEzx7Y0AkfB0VpJH1I80i7), nominated by Donald Trump as general counsel for the Commerce, Science and Transportation Department, and were subsequently arrested. "Anybody whose moral compass is so broken that they would condone torture doesn't deserve a position in the U.S. government," said protester Ken Ashe as he was handcuffed by Capitol Police. Human Rights First, along with 14 other human rights groups, have called on senators to oppose the nomination.
