The retracted CNN article was only the latest in a long series of spurious allegations aimed at shifting public opinion against Russia.

WaPo, NYT: Review Russia reporting after CNN resignations
Just Foreign Policy
Dear Chris,
Urge WaPo and NYT to review policies on Russia reporting.
Take Action. (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=KaMweBW7066WffdfYjqzsKLRjxXmWHZL)
Three prominent CNN journalists resigned on June 26 after CNN was forced to retract and apologize for a story linking a Trump ally to a Russian investment fund under congressional investigation. The CNN story had been based on a single anonymous source. An internal investigation by CNN management found that some standard editorial processes were not followed when the article was published. [1] Buzzfeed reported that CNN has now imposed strict new publishing restrictions for online articles involving Russia. [2]
But as Glenn Greenwald noted at The Intercept, the problem is not limited to CNN:
"CNN is hardly alone when it comes to embarrassing retractions regarding Russia. Over and over, major U.S. media outlets have published claims about the Russia Threat that turned out to be completely false - always in the direction of exaggerating the threat and/or inventing incriminating links between Moscow and the Trump circle. In virtually all cases, those stories involved evidence-free assertions from anonymous sources that these media outlets uncritically treated as fact, only for it to be revealed that they were entirely false.
Several of the most humiliating of these episodes have come from the Washington Post... In sum, anything is fair game when it comes to circulating accusations about official U.S. adversaries, no matter how baseless, and Russia currently occupies that role. (More generally: The less standing and power one has in official Washington, the more acceptable it is in U.S. media circles to publish false claims about them, as this [3] recent, shockingly falsehood-ridden New York Times article about RT host Lee Camp illustrates; it, too, now contains multiple corrections.)" [4]
Urge the Washington Post and the New York Times to review the standards of their Russia coverage by signing our petition at MoveOn (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=oiHzjEPIIvSxwBhTe8RApKLRjxXmWHZL).

Just another example among many, many more of why the media should be state funded, non-profit, and overseen by ethics committees comprised of private citizens. Take the narrative away from the liberal establishment's bourgeois rats and put it squarely under the control of the common people. Press with an agenda isn't a free press, and the fact that Americans fail to see this (or do something about it) convinces me that I live in a country chock-full of dumbasses.

This is rather Stalinistic, though. As a *radical-reform* it's good on-paper and for the sake of rhetoric, but is also mostly *improbable* under any version of capitalism -- like free food for all -- because of profit-minded corporate interests that would rather have people *pay*, whether for media access, and/or for food.

I don't think press without an agenda is a good thing anyway.
ETA: This isn't a statement in support of CNN or Fox or whatever, as I don't support any bourgeois agency. My point however is that we are fighting a war, so if we are to be releasing stories, or whatever, we have no obligation to retain a neutral standpoint, and in fact, it is desirable to even manipulate stories and facts (in essence, lie) as much as we can get away with, for the purposes of propaganda and such. Furthermore, increasing the general confusion of the publicly accessible information gives us an advantage in the level of generalized confusion within our ability to communicate with folks on local issues, even lying when necessary, to bring others into the fold in the war- heightening tensions at every turn that emotionally manipulates folks to be on our side. Doing this to organize in the workplace, or local levels has been very effective because even if the lies are discovered later, or they're knowledgeable of the manipulation, during time in the struggle a new ethic is formed, an ethic of resistance, which holds people far tighter than any ideology. I'm willing to bet this expands to the greater metropolis.
However, to expect the bourgeois news agencies to do any different is insanity, as if we are going to call it class war, then we have to accept that it is, indeed, a war. However with freeing mistrust of larger news agencies (both more left-liberal places like CNN and right liberal sources like Fox) which is resulting from their continued lies/fuck ups, we can counter this with personal anecdotes that, while they don't actually prove a damn thing, humans tend to find much more convincing.

This latest piece, arguably his potentially most explosive -- because it shows a President Trump risking triggering a World War III with Russia based upon his own rash decision, over the objections and to the dismay of his own military and intelligence advisers.

The drive to confront Russia has taken on added urgency since the humiliating defeat for the US when Syrian government forces recaptured Aleppo.
