This picture was taken inLa Havana the March, 6th 1960 by Alberto Diaz Guttériez alias Alberto Korda.

A few days before, a french ship, the Coubre, which was carrying weapons had been destroyed by a bomb of CIA.

The sixth of March, Fidel Castro was pronouncing a speech and thousands of people were listening him.
Che was late and when he arrived, he took a look around in order to estimate the number of cubans who were there. It is exactly at this time that the picture was taken.

many people believe it was taken during a contemplative moment of silence as che stood at the podium about to address the cuban people. but fidel was actually the one speaking at the time and che was standing behind him with other cuban leaders, seemingly caught in a distant thought.

You are thinking of a different picture. The picture being asked about is Che pointing a gun.

It looks like he is just checking out the gun, checking its sight out the front of a house.
