Urgent: Our colleague is being held captive

Help us free Amnesty Chair detained in Turkey. View email online (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817735950428806463718&tId=227153101&subjId=102469)

Chris – our colleague and longstanding human rights campaigner Taner Kılıç, Chair of Amnesty Turkey, has been detained on sham charges.

Turkey’s post-coup crackdown has spiralled further out of control this week, when Taner along with 22 other lawyers based in Izmir, were arrested on suspicion of involvement with a terrorist organisation. He has now officially been charged and remains in jail pre-trial.

Taner Kılıç is a human rights defender, not a criminal. Will you help us to demand his immediate release? (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817735950428806463718&tId=227153107&subjId=102469)

Yes, add my voice (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817735950428806463718&tId=227153110&subjId=102469)

The only claim that supposedly links Taner to the terrorist movement, Fethullah Gülen, is that a secure mobile messaging app called Bylock – reportedly used by the group – was discovered on his phone in August 2014. No evidence has been given to back this up.

The absurd charge against Mr Kılıç makes a mockery of justice, and highlights the devastating impact of the Turkish authorities’ crackdown following the failed coup attempt in July last year. Since then, over 100,000 public sector employees have been sacked and hundreds of journalists and media workers detained.

Taner’s detention shows how broad the coup has become, now penetrating deep into civil society. The Turkish authorities must be held to account for violating the rights of so many citizens.

Tell the Turkish authorities that they must drop Taner’s charges and release him immediately. (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817735950428806463718&tId=227153113&subjId=102469)

Taner has nothing to do with the Fethullah Gülen movement and has been highly critical of its role in Turkey. He must not face trial on the basis of such flimsy and inadequate accusations.

Yes, I'll take action (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817735950428806463718&tId=227153116&subjId=102469)
