Chris —

Nationwide anti-Muslim actions happening this weekend: How can we come together and show love instead of hate and nourish those most vulnerable in our communities?

The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) (http://www.codepink.org/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cairoklahoma.com%2Fresource% 2Fthe-empowerment-of-hate%2F&e=247b6f0c69174ee7dfa25e341c4eedfe&utm_source=codepink&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=islamophobia_1&n=3) found a 57% increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents during 2016, as well as a 44% increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes in the same period. Some weeks ago, a man on a Portland bus (http://www.codepink.org/r?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2017%2F05%2F26%2Fus %2Fportland-train-stabbing%2F&e=247b6f0c69174ee7dfa25e341c4eedfe&utm_source=codepink&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=islamophobia_1&n=4) killed two men and seriously wounded a third after they stopped him from screaming Islamophobic slurs at two Muslim teenagers.

Local Muslim groups are asking supporters to have “Solidarity with My Muslim Neighbour” gatherings that promote love and unity. Instead of counter protesting here are some things you can do:

• Support refugee centers in your community by volunteering or mentoring newcomers.

• Get to know your Muslim neighbors, co-workers, and people you come in contact with. Show them you care about their well-being and appreciate their culture and background. Help them overcome any social and economic barriers they might be experiencing. Or introduce them to someone who can help them.

• Invite a Muslim family to your home. Share a meal, and exchange ideas for promoting peace and unity. Better yet, organize a Pop Up For Peace (http://www.codepink.org/pop_ups_for_peace?e=247b6f0c69174ee7dfa25e341c4eed fe&utm_source=codepink&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=islamophobia_1&n=5) and bring people together to make supportive connections.

• Start a book club and invite your Muslim neighbor/s to join in. Select books that reflect the cultural diversity of Muslims and learn more together.

• Host a film screening that teaches and informs people about Islam and the rich cultural history of Muslims. Invite a Muslim scholar or professor to speak and share their views.

• Start a cooking club and invite your Muslim friends, neighbors, and co-workers to join in. What a great way to enjoy diverse cuisines and promote solidarity and peace!

• If you see a Muslim being harassed on the street, the bus, or the mall, report the crime immediately and if it’s safe to do so, rise up to defend them. Rally others to join you. Videotape the incident and post it on social media and send it to the news media and urge them to report hate crimes.

• Debunk myths and stereotypes. Defend Muslims and educate people on social media. Our social networks are full of vitriol and fake news against Islam and Muslims. Don’t be afraid to chime in and provide correct information and resources/links to accurate news.

• Go to the streets and show how love for Muslims looks like.

Check out these actions in Los Angeles. (http://www.codepink.org/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.resistmarch.org%2Fmission&e=247b6f0c69174ee7dfa25e341c4eedfe&utm_source=codepink&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=islamophobia_1&n=7)

Order/print and distribute our I love my Muslim Neighbour (http://www.codepink.org/i_heart_flyers?e=247b6f0c69174ee7dfa25e341c4eedfe&utm_source=codepink&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=islamophobia_1&n=8) flyers and graphics or post digital versions on social media.

#RiseLoveResist! Let’s rise for love — love is an action. Let us know ([email protected]) what you decide to do and how can we support you. We welcome your ideas, photos, and letters!

Growing peace and love,

Japanese Americans join Unity Vigil (http://fightbacknews.us1.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=a29530af96a02fc55d345e735&id=a3cbc91f1d&e=d323598fe4)

San José, CA - On June 10, 1000 people joined a Unity Vigil called by Multifaith Voices for Peace and Justice, Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), People Acting in Community Together (PACT), and Meet a Muslim. More than 130 religious, community, oppressed nationality and other organizations endorsed the vigil, which was organized on a week’s notice.

The vigil was prompted by the anti-Muslim group Act for America which put out a nationwide call for protests to be held on June 10. Their San Jose event was called just a week ago, and with the local Facebook page being hosted by a self-identified Trump campaigner in Virginia, their turnout was expected to be low. And it was, with the Unity Vigil participants outnumbering the anti-Muslim group by 20 to 1 or more.

One prominent group in the unity vigil were Japanese Americans, who have been turning out to solidarity events for American Muslims in large numbers. The Japanese American community remembers the World War II incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent, who were rounded up en masse on the West Coast and sent to concentration camps in desolate areas in the interior. Racist discrimination, war hysteria and a failure of political leadership drove the concentration camps for Japanese Americans just as they do today with the rising attacks on American Muslims and anti-Muslim policies by the Trump administration.

The Nihonmachi Outreach Committee (NOC) of San Jose brought their banner from a solidarity march with American Muslims in March that said “1942 - 2017: 75 years of resistance. No to islamophobia, no to concentration camps.” Another large group of Japanese Americans from San Francisco and the East Bay, the Nikkei Resisters, brought signs with copies of the 1942 posters ordering Japanese Americans into the camps. Other Japanese Americans at the vigil included members of the Silicon Valley Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the San Jose JACL, the Sequoia JACL, the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, the Asian Law Alliance, the Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple.
