ACT for America, the nation’s largest anti-Muslim hate group, has coordinated a series of protests in over 20 cities across the nation the weekend of June 10th. The timing of these protests during the month of Ramadan raises serious concerns of attacks on the Arab and Muslim American community. ACT, a hate group designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=TeXE%2FMuCL%2Bp7hxPKe%2BpSaD9mh47OHwun), has a long history of promoting policies at the federal and state levels intended to manufacture fear of Muslims, push xenophobia and anti-Arab sentiment.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is deeply concerned about the type of message that these protests send to the American public and to our country. It is unacceptable to vilify people simply because of their faith. In 2016, the FBI released its 2015 Hate Crime Statistics that revealed an increase in hate crimes against Arabs and Muslims. In this year alone, dozens of Muslims and persons was targeted based on anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry, have been victims of senseless violence.
In this day and age of heightened Islamophobia and Anti-Arab rhetoric, it is crucial that everyone stay up to date with these targeted events and potential threats to our community. ADC has tools and resources to assist you in these situations such as “Knowing your rights” (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=YYqH61veH67YS%2Fj6LfqL1D9mh47OHwun).
We are aware that rallies and protests are being organized to defend against these bigoted demonstrations. If you plan to go to a rally or protest, you can take several safety precautions:
• Take a friend, colleague or friend with you.
• Designate a safe place for you and your partner to meet up if anything happens.
• Make sure a trusted person whom is not at the protest knows your location and necessary identification information.
• Make sure that you know the location of the nearest hospital and police station.
• Make sure to approach a Legal Observer (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=AeZWjOtIJF%2BSH5tV%2Bnxw2T9mh47OHwun) if you have any questions or issues at the protest or rally. Legal observers will be deployed at many rallies and protests throughout the country, they will be wearing the Lime Green Hats.
If ever you find yourself in a situation that you have been discriminated against, it is imperative that you document and report the incident right away (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=IqC1LRCjjO41s5FqO3dt52UVj443pqV%2F), so that we may be able to offer further assistance in your case.
Please remember to stay vigilant and safe and as always, let us know how we can be there for you.
