Crimes committed by police officers are still crimes.

Chris,
There is no job in the world that is so righteous and so important that the people who do it should be allowed to suspend their personal morals. Yet that's the exact logic behind the Back the Blue Act of 2017, which, if passed, would allow cops who commit acts of brutality to get away with it by limiting the rights of the people they harm. (http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AXL5t/ztaL/t8hl)
It's already tragically difficult to hold police officers accountable for gross acts of misconduct. We've seen cops keep their jobs after beating Eric Garner to death for selling individual cigarettes, shooting 12-year-old Tamir Rice for the "crime" of playing with a toy gun, and killing Philando Castile during a routine traffic stop.
But this law goes even further. Cops would get broad latitude to act with impunity so long as they can say you "more likely than not" committed a felony, a ridiculously low bar for justification. Plus, it limits how much money you can collect. So even if you're shot dead during a traffic stop, cops would only have to pay for your funeral, not even the cost of taking them to court. Many lawyers and human rights experts worry this could effectively be the end police liability. (http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AXL5t/ztaL/t8hl)
Republicans like to shout a lot about "law and order," but crimes committed by police officers are still crimes. Allowing cops to get away with them just because they wear a blue uniform isn't creating law and order. It's institutionalizing lawlessness for a select few.
Tell your member of Congress to oppose the Back the Blue Act of 2017. (http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AXL5t/ztaL/t8hl)
