Goals for party goers are to enjoy the company of community, engage in meaningful discussion around the criminalization of Black folks and people of color, and schedule a time to visit your Congressperson to urge them to not to let Sessions' threats become a reality.
13th chronicles the Black experience in the U.S. and draws lines between slavery, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration. It highlights the dog whistle politics that were used as a tactic to criminalize Black people by targeting drug abuse as a crime rather than health and economic issues. The film talks about the process of the war on drugs going from rhetoric to a real war waged on us--which couldnt be more important as Sessions attempts to double down on the harmful policies that devastated our communities.
This June marks 46 years since Richard Nixon declared the War on Drugs in 1971. But from todays headlines, you wouldnt know it was that long ago. Just a couple weeks ago, Sessions released a memo to prosecutors urging that they go for the harshest sentences as it relates to drug charges. History tells us what these laws really target--and its not curbing drug abuse. in 2016 one of Nixons aides admitted to targeting the Black liberation movement and anti-war movement with media propaganda that turned into real policy. It that has since cost us over $1 trillion, countless families destroyed, and thousands of lives lost. Together, by gathering in our communities for the 13th screenings, we can facilitate community conversations about the very real threat Sessions and the War on Drugs pose for Black families.
Chris, will you host your very own house party screening the Netflix Original film 13th on June 13th? (https://act.colorofchange.org/go/8022?t=8&akid=7557.872082.M33RPS)
Were learning that straight up calling Trump and his cronies racist, sexist, classist and homophobic isnt enough. Real stories from real people are what resonates with us as Americans. The stories of the real pain, trauma, triumph, and sacrifice the Black community is still facing is what pulls at the heartstrings of people. The house parties will be a place where these stories that are hard to share will be met with warm compassion, connectedness, and understanding. Community and joy can act as a healing balm for the wounds we carry. And when hundreds of us come together for these screenings on the day of Sessions testimony we can show Congress just how many of us need them to stand up and oppose Sessions attempts to take us under.
Help us bring communities together in the collective struggle by hosting a house party on June 13th. (https://act.colorofchange.org/go/8022?t=9&akid=7557.872082.M33RPS)
Don't forget to invite your folks to come through!
Until justice is real
