You have to see what we did yesterday
Dear Chris,
Yesterday was New Yorks annual Celebrate Israel Parade. Its one of the biggest parades in the city, and for years its been a mandatory event for mayors, governors, and other powerbrokers. (Fact: Donald Trump was the parades Grand Marshal in 2004.)
But while Palestinians are denied their freedom, what is there to celebrate?
So with JVPers and friends, we did something about it-- and you have to see it.

Over 100 activists, seven of whom were arrested for civil disobedience, stopped and slowed the parade over and over again with a vision of what we can celebrate: ending Israeli Apartheid and the #DeadlyExchange between US and Israeli police and military.
The rolling disruptions of the parade by JVP members from New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and DC highlighted the devastating impact of Israels separate and unequal policies toward Palestinians.
One group blocked New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and his contingent, protesting the New York Police Departments collaboration with Israeli security forces, an exchange of worst practices that harm Palestinians as well as communities of color in the US.
Another group of queer Jews staged a sit in disrupting the LGBTQ contingent, holding signs saying No pride in apartheid and Queer Jews for a free Palestine.
Yet another hosted a circus to demonstrate the absurdity of Israels claims to be a democracy while maintaining an unending occupation and denying nearly half the population living under its control the right to vote.
And on top of all that, we held a family-oriented rally to empower the next generation of activists to develop the skills and creativity to build a free and just world.
The parade was a celebration of 50 years of occupation, nearly 70 years of Nakba, the expulsion of Palestinians from their lands, and dangerous alliances between US and Israeli police and military. We couldn't celebrate that.
But we can come together to celebrate, dream and build what comes next, after apartheid ends. Thats exactly what we did yesterday, and what we will keep doing, until Palestinians are free.
