Tell El Salvador to lift its total ban on abortion

Center for Reproductive Rights - ReproductiveRights.org

Chris—

Manuela was a 33-year-old Salvadoran mother of two who was accused of having an abortion by the medical professionals treating her for severe complications she suffered during a miscarriage.

She was charged with murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison, where she died of advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma less than a year after her miscarriage.

Manuela is one of many Salvadoran women treated as criminals under El Salvador’s extreme abortion laws, which prohibit abortion in all circumstances, even when a woman’s life is at risk or in cases of rape. Women are put in jail for having abortions—and sometimes even for having miscarriages.

Today is International Day of Action for Women’s Health, and we’re calling attention to the effects of El Salvador’s harsh abortion restrictions on women like Manuela. Sign our petition today urging El Salvador to reform its abortion laws. (http://support.reproductiverights.org/site/R?i=PIoQ4TM5asBIDpOczf_tlg)

El Salvador will soon consider a bill that would partially lift the total ban.

It would decriminalize abortion in four cases: to save the life of a pregnant woman; if the pregnancy is a result of sexual violence from human trafficking; if there’s a fetal abnormality; and if the pregnancy is the result of the rape and abuse of a minor.

By adding your voice, you can show El Salvador’s Congress the importance of passing this bill and help ensure that women like Manuela don’t face jail time when something goes wrong with their pregnancies.

El Salvador’s total abortion ban violates women’s rights and puts their health and lives at risk. Add your name now to call on El Salvador to amend its laws criminalizing abortion:
