Kalpona Akter, Executive Director
Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity

Tragedies like the Rana Plaza factory collapse have brought more attention to situations that are faced by workers around the world who produce goods for U.S. consumers. That awareness is important! One of the questions I get most often, however, is: “What can I do to help?” As individual consumers, it can be difficult to know where we fit into these complex, extensive global supply chains.

Next week, we’re taking on this question in an activist webinar led by one of our longtime Bangladeshi partners, Kalpona Akter. Kalpona is the executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity (BCWS), one of Bangladesh’s most prominent labor rights advocacy organizations. She started working in a garment factory when she was 12 years old and now she's an internationally-recognized labor rights advocate. Together with representatives from ILRF and the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable, we'll discuss strategies you can use to keep sweatshop clothing out of your city or state.

Register for the SweatFree Communities: Activist Informational Webinar that will take place via webcast on June 1st at 3:00pm EDT. (https://laborrights.z2systems.com/track//servlet/DisplayLink?orgId=laborrights&emailId=e93d0229f1401f25c04677f614edc149em9657827e 93&secureId=OF4U7VVi3j8p%2Fe2xjunAQw%3D%3D&linkId=17764&targetUrl=http://goo.gl/forms/ZV2zCJLsJDUp0lcJ2)

In this webinar, we’ll discuss concrete steps local activists can take in their communities that can impact garment workers all over the world. Through our SweatFree Communities campaign, community members can encourage the cities, states and school districts where they live to adopt policies to purchase goods made in humane conditions by workers who are paid decent wages. By adopting a sweatfree policy, an institution makes a commitment to use its leverage to help improve conditions for sweatshop workers.

Register for the webinar here, and help us send the message: not with their sweat, not with our dollars! In solidarity,
