Dear Chris,

Resist Discrimination in North Carolina

If the “Conference of Champions” wants to be a champion for LGBTQ student-athletes and their rights everywhere, it needs to take a stand.

Over 50,000 CREDO activists have joined you in signing our petition demanding that the conference suspend all travel of student-athletes to North Carolina and any other state that attacks LGBTQ people and their rights.

It’s time for the Pac-12 Conference to take a stand. That’s why we’re turning up the pressure.

Will you call Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott and tell him to immediately suspend all travel of student-athletes to North Carolina and any other state that isn’t safe for LGBTQ people? North Carolina has been under extreme scrutiny for over a year since it initially passed hateful, anti-LGBTQ H.B. 2. But this isn’t just about North Carolina. Extreme right-wing anti-LGBTQ lawmakers are proposing and considering discriminatory legislation in states across the country, emboldened in part by North Carolina’s continued discrimination. Just days ago, an anti-LGBTQ “bathroom bill” similar to H.B. 2 passed through the Texas House.1 When states that discriminate are not held accountable, it emboldens bigoted legislators across the country to push for discriminatory measures in their own states.

The Pac-12 – the premier athletic conference in the western United States – is one of the Power Five conferences in the NCAA. Its own mission proclaims a commitment to gender equity and the welfare of student athletes. It represents college athletes at 12 schools, including schools in California, Oregon and Washington – states that champion LGBTQ equality.

Every day that passes without the Pac-12 suspending travel to anti-LGBTQ states is a day that the conference tacitly supports bigoted laws and puts student-athletes in danger.

The Pac-12 conference has an opportunity to send a powerful message to North Carolina, the NCAA and lawmakers all over the country: Anti-LGBTQ legislation like H.B. 2 is unacceptable. We have to do everything we can to make sure they take action.
