Prominent Ugandan feminist, Dr. Stella Nyanzi, was arrested and put behind bars because of a Facebook post. (http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AXE4d/zS2w/t8hl)
After Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni didn't follow through on a campaign promise to provide schoolgirls with sanitary pads, Nyanzi created her own campaign to do so. She also criticized the president on Facebook, referring to him as a "pair of buttocks." She was then arrested and detained under Uganda's Computer Misuse Act.
This isn't some sick joke, this is the reality for Nyanzi and we must raise our voices now. No one should face charges for exercising their freedom of speech. (http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AXE4d/zS2w/t8hl) This case sets a precedent that could endanger any person, at any time.
Earlier this month, Stella Nyanzi was finally released from jail after facing weeks of uncertainty about whether or not she would be granted bail. This is great news, but the fight still isn't over. Authorities have yet to drop the charges and Nyanzi is still at risk of facing criminal charges just for a Facebook post.
We must make our voices loud and clear in the lead up to Nyanzi's next court appearance on May 25th. Please sign and share as widely as you can to help ensure that prosecutors drop these ridiculous charges. (http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AXE4d/zS2w/t8hl)
