Event description:
Rebecca Pierce will present a lecture and film screening focusing on the connections between anti-Black racism and police brutality in Israel and the Palestinian struggle for justice. Using original clips and documentary shorts about Palestinians, Ethiopian and Mizrahi Jews, and African Refugees, she will illustrate the connections and tensions between these marginalized communities under Israel’s divide and conquer rule. Her talk will also touch on police exchange programs between the United States and Israel, and aims to shed light on the hope, and challenges, for a joint struggle for justice from the US to Palestine.
Bio:
Rebecca Pierce is an African American and Jewish documentary filmmaker, journalist, and organizer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work focuses on issues of racial justice in the United States, Palestine and Israel, highlighting the impact of state violence on marginalized communities. She is a core member of the Jews of Color and Sephardi/Mizrahi Caucus organized in partnership with Jewish Voice for Peace, where she is Editor-in-Chief of the racial justice blog Unruly (http://jewishvoiceforpeace.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=44fda0b60aa5102296294048f&id=e17e42cb97&e=079ae7db83). Her journalism has been featured in The Nation, Alternet, Mondoweiss, and Electronic Intifada.
