After 20 months of talks, the UIS administration forced faculty on strike by bargaining in bad faith and refusing to negotiate issues important to the school community like discrimination and policies that will retain high quality professors. Solidarity with striking workers

Members of my union, the University of Illinois Springfield United Faculty, which represents tenure-track faculty at UIS, are on strike after negotiations with the university administration broke down this week, forcing us to walk the picket line in the final weeks of the school year.

After 20 months of talks, the UIS administration forced faculty to go on strike by bargaining in bad faith and refusing to negotiate issues important to the school community, such as discrimination and policies that will retain high-quality professors.

Stand in solidarity with UIS and sign this petition to President Timothy Killeen and Chancellor Susan Koch, urging them to come back to the table and bargain in good faith for a contract that is fair to faculty, students and the community. We are fighting for a fair contract—one that keeps experience and expertise in the classroom and ensures equal treatment for all members of the UIS community.

But, the university is reserving the right to discriminate against faculty on the basis of political affiliation, military status and parental status. It refuses to negotiate a nondiscrimination policy.

A fair contract that protects the integrity of the process for retention, promotion and tenure helps us recruit and retain high-quality faculty and would create a stable educational environment for our students.

Chancellor Koch is failing to play a leadership role at UIS. The university has failed to bring decision-makers to the negotiations—university negotiators are not taking their jobs seriously and are failing to bargain in good faith. The UIS administration is failing students and the faculty who serve those students.
