BREAKING: Abortion Coverage Bill Passes IL House!
All Above All | United to Restore and Sustain Abortion Coverage for Low-Income Women
Dear Chris,
Did you hear?! HB 40, a bill that lifts current restrictions on abortion coverage for women enrolled in Medicaid or state employee health insurance plans, passed the Illinois House by a vote of 62-55!
. . . . . . .
“HB 40 is a bill about equal access and ensuring poor women can access their health care.”
REP. CHRISTIAN MITCHELL
. . . . . . .
Incredible champions like Reps. Carol Ammons (Champaign-Urbana) and Christian Mitchell (Chicago) spoke out against racist and sexist rhetoric on the House floor and reminded their colleagues that no one should be denied coverage for abortion just because they’re poor. Rep. Kelly Cassidy (Chicago) spoke about the role that public insurance coverage for abortion had on her life and her family when she found herself in need of an abortion.
But we’re not done yet and we need your help to get the bill through the Senate. Many representatives talked about the calls and emails they are getting from their constituents on this bill -- great work! -- now make sure your senator also knows where you stand!
Email your senator now and urge them to vote YES on HB 40. (http://action.allaboveall.org/page/m/52307d6c/690c13a6/372426d2/18fb8e92/3187066490/VEsH/)
We also need to keep the heat on Governor Rauner and urge him to reconsider his promise to veto this bill. As we saw today in the House of Representatives, this bill has strong support.
Let’s flood Governor Rauner’s office with calls (217-782-0244) and tweets (http://action.allaboveall.org/page/m/52307d6c/690c13a6/372426d2/18fb8e9d/3187066490/VEsE/) to let him know he cannot abandon low-income Illinoisans.
Thank you for lifting your voice and getting us this far. Let’s keep moving this bill forward!
