Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I am writing this letter to urge you and your union to participate in one or more of the protest actions here in San Francisco and Oakland on Monday, May 1st, a "Day Without Immigrants."

In case you have not yet seen the leaflet for May 1st produced by the San Francisco Labor Council, I am attaching it to this message in its English, Spanish and Chinese versions. Please print out and make copies for all your co-workers, friends and family.

As you can see, the day's program of events in San Francisco includes:

* an 8 am protest at the ICE building in the Financial District

* a 9 am breakfast / rally at ILWU Local 10

* an 11 am assembly at Justin Herman Plaza
* a 12 noon kickoff for the March to Civic Center

* and a 2 pm Rally at Civic Center

[The events in Oakland are listed in the attached leaflets.]

With the growing attacks on our immigrant members and community sisters and brothers (deportations, Wall of Shame, raids, travel ban, racist assaults) -- and with the mounting attacks on our unions (federal "Right-to-Work" for less legislation looming on the horizon) and on our social services (as $54 billion more are earmarked for war instead of human needs) -- this is the time for labor to flex our muscles and cement the alliance between labor and the immigrant working class. It is the time to build our future!

For more information, go to www.may1.org.

In solidarity,

Alan Benjamin
OPEIU Local 29 Delegate to SF Labor Council
