Recently, the government of Kazakhstan conducted large-scale repression against independent trade unions operating in the west of the country.
Local officials and managers of the oil service company OCC tried to suppress a peaceful demonstration by the workers in January. This company is a part of KazMunaiGas, the largest state oil and gas company in the country.
They arrested two union leaders, Amin Yeleusinov and Nurbek Kushakbayev. They were charged under the country's repressive criminal code because they had appealed for a strike.
In early April, Kushakbayev was sentenced to two and a half years in a corrective labour colony.
The judge also supported the company's claim for about $80,000 worth of alleged damages.
OCC has now begun mass layoffs of workers who participated in the protests.
This is outrageous and we must speak out against it.
Working together with the International Trade Union Confederation and IndustriALL global union, we have now launched an online campaign demanding that the company withdraw its claims of damages, stop repression and start dialogue with its workers.

Thank you!
