Stop the execution rush in Arkansas

US state to execute 8 men in 10 days. Help stop the Arkansas execution assembly line. View email online (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817602709428806463218&tId=225377897)

Hi Chris,

Arkansas is planning to execute eight men in the space of 10 days this month – before the state’s supply of a drug used in the lethal injection process runs out.

This is a rushed and misguided resumption of the death penalty in a state that hasn’t executed for 12 years.

Tell the governor of Arkansas to urgently stop the executions. (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817602709428806463218&tId=225377903)

Yes - I'll take action (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817602709428806463218&tId=225377906)

By the end of this month, the US state of Arkansas wants to have killed eight men – because one of the drugs used in the three-step lethal injection process is nearly past its ‘use by’ date.

Arkansas hasn’t executed anyone since 2005, so this would be a huge step backwards – bucking the general trend of the declining use of the death penalty across the US.

In recent years, executions in Arkansas have been suspended due to challenges to the lethal injection process in the state. Now, because state supplies of one of the drugs key to the execution process are close to expiring, eight men have been told they have days to live. This sort of decision makes a mockery of the justice system – and of prisoners’ lives.

Call for an urgent halt to the executions (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817602709428806463218&tId=225377909)

The state execution of prisoners always violates their right to life. On top of that, we have serious concerns about the legality of executing some of the men – two have serious mental health conditions, and many of them did not appear to have been given a fair trial.

This rush to execute is wrong and reckless but it can be stopped. Please take a moment to email Governor Hutchinson and ask him to stand on the side of rights. There is time to stop this.

Demand the governor stops the execution rush. (http://webmail.amnesty.org.uk/_act/link.php?mId=J9189917074817602709428806463218&tId=225377915)

Urgent death penalty campaign in Arkansas

Dear Chris,

We wanted to make sure you saw this urgent campaign and had a chance to lend your support to stop Arkansas’ “conveyor belt of death”. Take action today and on Friday, Amnesty International will be delivering your petitions directly to Governor Hutchinson.

Tell Governor Hutchinson to stop these executions now. Add your name and sign the petition. (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=900919&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==)

In just 5 days, Arkansas will start up what many are calling an “assembly line of death”. Don. Bruce. Stacey. Ledell. Jack. Marcel. Jason. Kenneth. These are the eight men that Arkansas plans to execute over the course of ten days. The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane punishment that violates human rights but it can be stopped. Arkansas Governor Hutchinson could stop this rush to execute but he needs to hear from you.

Tell Governor Hutchinson to stop these executions now. Add your name and sign the petition. (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=900919&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==)

Eight executions in ten days is more than any state has undergone since the Supreme Court reinstated the capital punishment in 1976. So why the rush? Arkansas has exactly eight doses left of a crucial drug used to perform lethal injections, and it’s set to expire at the end of April. So, Governor Hutchinson has scheduled eight executions packed into a ten-day period — as if the justice system was a conveyor belt. This rush to execute is wrong and reckless but it can be stopped. Arkansas Governor Hutchinson could halt these executions and that is why he needs to hear from Amnesty members like you.

Tell Governor Hutchinson to stop these executions now. Sign the petition. (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=900919&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==)

While the rapid executions in Arkansas remain a threat, we are making progress to end the death penalty once for all. Two executions have recently been stayed by the courts, those of Paul Storey in Texas and Jason McGehee in Arkansas. Amnesty activists like you are one of reasons these executions were stayed. Together we can stop the executions in Arkansas too.

Thank you for taking action,

Dear Chris,

Last night, something big happened. A judge in Arkansas temporarily blocked the remaining six executions from taking place after Amnesty members and activists like you stood up.

Yesterday in Little Rock, Amnesty members and other activists from around the country and the world were heard. Hundreds gathered at the Arkansas State Capitol to deliver signatures – more than 157,000 – demanding a stop to the assembly line of death.

Just hours after we delivered your petitions, an Arkansas judge stopped the executions from moving forward.1 But only temporarily. While this is a crucial development in the fight against the death penalty, there is more work to be done.

The executions are halted for now, but we need to keep up the pressure on Governor Hutchinson to stop them for good.

Join us as we continue to fight against the death penalty. Take action now (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=903358&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0)

Breaking Update on Arkansas Executions

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your activism as we fight against the conveyor belt of executions in Arkansas. Last time we wrote you, all eight executions had been put on hold. Now we write you with an update and an ask to continue fighting.

Tell Governor Hutchinson to stop these horrific executions (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=909114&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0)

Despite continued calls from Amnesty International and activists around the world, one of the “Arkansas Eight”, Ledell Lee was executed on Thursday, April 20. Shortly before he was put to death, the US Supreme Court denied his final appeals to perform a simple DNA test that could have proven his guilt or innocence.

As troubling as this news is, this is more reason to keep fighting. Our calls are being heard and on Monday we will be back in Little Rock to personally deliver your petitions to Governor Hutchinson.

Before Monday, tell Governor Hutchinson to stop these executions for good (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=909115&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0)

Our activism is working. Stacey Johnson was also scheduled for execution on Monday, but his execution was stayed and his death warrant has expired!

Out of the eight men originally slated for execution on Arkansas’ conveyor belt of death, four are now safe: execution warrants have expired for Don Davis, Bruce Ward, and Stacey Johnson, and a stay is in place for Jason McGehee.

But Arkansas is allowing the conveyor belt to move forward, and three prisoners are still at risk of imminent execution. Kenneth Williams, Marcel Williams and Jack Jones still need your support.

Act now to tell Governor Hutchinson he must stop this horrific disregard for human rights (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=909116&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0)

Next steps to end the death penalty

Dear Chris,

Thank you for taking action to stop the #8in10 executions in Arkansas. Because you took action, we were able to stop the executions of four of the eight men scheduled to die in Arkansas’ conveyor belt of death.

We were not able to stop four executions. I regret to tell you of the deaths of Ledell Lee, Marcel Williams, Jack Jones, and Kenneth Williams at the hands of the state of Arkansas and Governor Asa Hutchinson.

Your state is one of the 19 states that have abolished the death penalty – but some states are considering bills to bring the death penalty back.

Call on your governor to stand against executions ever returning. (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=926021&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0)

Some states are contemplating bills that could reinstate the death penalty, even in states that abolished it decades ago. But your governor can veto any new legislation that would bring the death penalty back.

Make sure your governor will stand against attempts to return to state killing and veto any legislation that could bring back executions to your state.

Call on your governor to make sure the death penalty never returns to your state! (https://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=926021&ea.campaigner.email=boBFmXJG0Szuya%2FTZFVW597cBTh3 KwkR&ea.campaigner.id=taC3hZjkDyGZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0)

James Clark
