Gov. Rick Scott doesn't trust Black women

We must stand with Aramis Ayala. We need real leaders like her.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is undermining justice. He must be stopped.

TAKE ACTION! (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/gov-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=2&akid=7127.872082.t3qDO9)

Chris,

Aramis Ayala, the first Black woman state attorney in Florida history, just made a heroic move by refusing to seek the death penalty in any case--and Florida Governor Rick Scott removed her from a key case and handed it over to a white prosecutor in another county.1

Even the victim’s family is in support of Ayala’s decision to not pursue the death penalty.2 Gov. Scott is punishing her for doing the right thing and undermining the voters who chose her--and he must be stopped.

In November, Ayala ousted incumbent Jeff Ashton. She ran on a daring and progressive platform in which she championed dramatic changes to the criminal justice system that would shift the power and control from law enforcement to enhancing safety and well-being of community members. As State Attorney, Ayala understands that justice deserves to be in the hands of the people. Now, she’s facing a careless and disrespectful move from a governor who continues to trample on any real progress towards criminal justice reform--we must have her back to make sure other prosecutors follow in her footsteps.

Demand Governor Rick Scott respect the people’s choice, reverse his decision and put State Attorney Aramis Ayala back on the case. (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/gov-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=3&akid=7127.872082.t3qDO9)

This is about more than just the death penalty. Black communities and our allies have built a movement over the last year to replace the worst prosecutors with leaders who want to change the system from the inside out--like Aramis Ayala and Kim Foxx in Chicago. Just like every other movement that has built power for Black people, this movement is being met with anti-Blackness, right wing resistance, and anti-democratic tactics intended to keep our communities trapped under the leadership of white conservatives.

We've seen it before. After the election of the first Black President, we saw a wave of voter suppression laws intended to constrain Black political power and right-wing politicians refusing to let President Obama conduct the most basic aspects of his duties like appointing a Supreme Court Justice. We have to send a clear signal that when it comes to real leaders like Aramis Ayala, we've got their backs.

Governor Rick Scott must let state attorney Aramis Ayala do her job. Tell him to reverse his decision NOW. (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/gov-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=4&akid=7127.872082.t3qDO9)

During his tenure, Governor Rick Scott has repeatedly failed to step up to other state attorneys when they did not serve justice. He shunned the family of Trayvon Martin. In 2012, when 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed by cop wannabe George Zimmerman, Governor Scott moved too slowly to pursue justice for the teenage boy and his family. It was only after urgent pleas from protesters and community members that Scott finally stepped up and appointed a special prosecutor. But who he appointed was damaging--Angela Corey--whom he knew would support his “Stand Your Ground” law where he saw fit. Instead of fighting for justice, Corey allowed Zimmerman to get off. Since then, the Governor hasn't done a thing about the criminalization of Black folks or the laws that allow them to be killed in cold blood.

Yet, Governor Scott did not even wait a day to take State Attorney Aramis Ayala off this crucial case, diminishing and undermining her position as a prosecutor. He is sending a scary and unfair message -- the voters’ choice in who they elect to serve real justice does not matter.

Local prosecutors are the most influential decision makers in the criminal justice system and their work has an enormous impact on the lives of the most vulnerable among us. Our communities cannot afford to have elected leaders put their own interests and power above the people. That is why Orange-Osceola County State Attorney Aramis Ayala--someone who will stay committed to making justice a reality for all people--is the kind of leader that we need. We cannot stand by and let someone like Governor Rick Scott silence her and the voters who elected her to fix our criminal justice system. Let’s show up for Ayala’s bravery and integrity.

Sign the petition. (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/gov-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=5&akid=7127.872082.t3qDO9)

Gov. Rick Scott isn't ready for this

Hundreds of Black people are riding on buses to Gov. Rick Scott's office next week for the #StandWithAramis rally

But we need to raise $20,000 in four days to fund it. Can you help us reach our goal?

Chris,

Hundreds of Black voters and Color of Change members from four Florida cities are getting on buses to the State Capitol in Tallahassee to shut down Rick Scott--and we need to raise $20,000 in FOUR days to make it happen. Can you help us reach our $20,000 goal to fund the Rally in Tally by donating $3? (https://coc.actionkit.com/go/7641?amount=3&t=3&akid=7168.872082.g--iaB)

The death penalty serves no public good. And last week Gov. Rick Scott abused his power to wrongfully remove the first Black State Attorney in FL's history, Aramis Ayala, because she stood against using it.1 Then news came out that he might try to permanently remove her from office.2 Instead of supporting her and trusting the leadership of Black women, Gov. Rick Scott is trying to publicly shame and undermine Aramis Ayala. This is a clear attack on Black political leadership and a slap in the face to the voters who put her into office.

It’s sparking national outrage. And next week, Thursday, there will be a huge “Rally in Tally” where we’ll deliver over 80,000 petition signatures from Color of Change members to Gov. Rick Scott’s front door letting him know we #StandWithAramis. The energy to support this is HUGE in Florida and hundreds of folks are taking the “Ride for Aramis” from their respective cities to Tallahassee and show up for this momentous day of action.

But we can’t make the “Ride for Aramis” happen unless we raise $20,000 in the next four days--will you chip in $3? (https://coc.actionkit.com/go/7641?amount=3&t=4&akid=7168.872082.g--iaB)

Specifically, we need your help to fund:

12 charter buses transporting over 660 people from Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Jacksonville to Tallahassee.
A local organizer’s salary for a week of working with community folks and getting them to the State Capitol
Food and supplies to feed and take care of our folks on the ride
Black people in Florida made history with their votes last November and now they are being told their choices don’t matter. When voters turned out to support and put Aramis Ayala into office, they were voting her values into office. Her announcement not to use the death penalty was informed not just by the facts around its effectiveness both in safety and cost, but by the people who supported her with their votes.

But we know this is about more than just the death penalty.

People are frustrated and ready to take direct action. And when we show up in full force on 12 buses, we can show Gov. Rick Scott that, from the prisons to the ballot box and even in political office, all Black lives matter and are worth defending and protecting. Can you help us make this happen?

We only have four days to raise $20,000. Chip in $3 to help us reach our goal. (https://coc.actionkit.com/go/7641?amount=3&t=5&akid=7168.872082.g--iaB)

During his tenure, Governor Rick Scott has repeatedly failed to step up to other state attorneys when they did not serve justice. Just last week, outrage spread across the state as Miami State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle failed to charge prison guards who literally boiled a man, Darren Rainey, to death in a shower stall.3 Gov. Scott was and remains silent about this horrific injustice. Yet he did not wait even a day to attack and undermine the leadership of Aramis Ayala after she showed the kind of leadership we need all prosecutors to show.

But now, Gov. Scott is feeling the pressure as more and more people stand up in support of Aramis Ayala. Color of Change members have made hundreds of calls to his office. Over 100 lawyer, judges, and law professionals published a letter in support of her.4 Yesterday the Legislative Black Caucus showed a stance of solidarity.5 Even the family of Sade Dixon, the victim in the Markeith Loyd case, has come out in support of Aramis Ayala and the choice she made.6

And Gov. Rick Scott is shook--he still hasn't even submitted the official order to take Ayala off the case because he's triple and quadruple checking the legality of it. If over 660 Floridians storm the capitol to deliver 80,000 petition signatures next Thursday, we can WIN this--but we need your help in raising $20,000 to do it.

Donate $3 and help us reach our $20,000 goal and make the “Rally in Tally” a reality. (https://coc.actionkit.com/go/7641?amount=3&t=6&akid=7168.872082.g--iaB)

Sincerely,

Arisha, Rashad, Scott, Malaya, Clarise, Enchanta, Anay and the rest of the Color Of Change team

P.S. If you live in Tallahassee, Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg or Jacksonville (or know someone that does), please come to the Rally in Tally with us! You can RSVP here.

Call Gov. Rick Scott NOW: #StandWithAramis

We're flooding Gov. Rick Scott's office with calls to let him know we #StandWithAramis.

https://d11gn0ip9m46ig.cloudfront.net/images/StandWithAramis-bw-fb.jpg

Will you make a call too?

Gov. Rick Scott's office: 646-760-4838

CALL NOW! (https://act.colorofchange.org/call/call-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=2&akid=7176.872082.OBiIsz)

Chris,

Gov. Rick Scott is gunning for Aramis Ayala--and we have to speak up even louder in support of her.

After removing her from a key case because she pledged against using the death penalty, Rick Scott could move to overstep his authority and remove Aramis Ayala from office PERMANENTLY.1

It's sparking outrage across the country--over 100 lawyer, judges, and law professionals published a letter in support of her.2 And over 80,000 Color of Change members have joined you to demand Rick Scott let Aramis Ayala do her job.

Gov. Scott is feeling the pressure. He still hasn't even submitted the official order to take Ayala off the case because he's triple and quadruple checking the legality of it. We can win this.

But we have to take it up a notch. That's why we're flooding Gov. Rick Scott's office with calls today to make sure he knows which side the people are on.

Will you make a call to Gov. Rick Scott's office to let him know you #StandWithAramis? (https://act.colorofchange.org/call/call-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=3&akid=7176.872082.OBiIsz)

Voters have spoken, but Rick Scott is trying to silence them. When voters turned out to support and put Aramis Ayala into office in November, they were voting her values into office. Her announcement not to use the death penalty was informed not just by the facts around its effectiveness both in safety and cost, but by the people who supported her with their votes. We can't let Gov. Rick Scott's agenda trample on democracy.

This is a clear attack on the growing momentum of Black political leadership. Over the last several years, a Black political movement has been built to combat against police violence, mass incarceration, and the complete destruction the criminal justice system has inflicted on Black people. Black women have led the way in this fight.

Aramis Ayala is the first Black woman ever to be elected as state attorney in Florida. We’ve witnessed the bravery of Baltimore's state's attorney, Marilyn Mosby, who took on the police officers who were neglectful and killed Freddie Gray--only to now face a lawsuit and major backlash from the same officers she tried to hold accountable. Now Ayala is facing a similar retaliation from Governor Rick Scott who is punishing her for doing what’s right and attempting to push her out.

We cannot stand for this. We must have Aramis Ayala’s back.

Make a call today. (https://act.colorofchange.org/call/call-rick-scott-aramis-ayala/?t=4&akid=7176.872082.OBiIsz)
