100 Disruptions: The Kalief Browder Story
freepress.net
Chris,
In the era of Trump and Sessions, we must challenge the media to tell the stories of people of color and other marginalized communities.
This storytelling can be a matter of life and death: Racially biased coverage is rampant in crime reporting, overrepresenting people of color as criminals and White people as victims.
In New York City in 2010, 16-year-old Kalief Browder fought to tell his story and prove his innocence after being accused of stealing a book bag. He refused to plead guilty and subsequently spent three years enduring physical assaults and solitary confinement on Rikers Island while awaiting trial. Though Browder was eventually released, he never overcame the trauma and committed suicide in 2015 at age 22.
Browders story is being elevated in a powerful new miniseries called TIME: The Kalief Browder Story (http://act.freepress.net/go/16721?t=1&akid=6215.9036884.kqW3zE) and todays action is to check out this short infographic and teaser for the series (http://act.freepress.net/go/16722?t=2&akid=6215.9036884.kqW3zE) detailing the juvenile-incarceration crisis in New York.
Thanks for all that you do
