Dear Chris,

Prominent human rights activist Elena Urlaeva was detained by police in Uzbekistan on March 1, and is now being forcibly held in a psychiatric institution. Elena was verbally and physically attacked by police, and detained the day before she was set to meet with a delegation from the International Trade Union Confederation and the World Bank Group to share information about the Uzbek government’s widespread use of forced labor in its annual cotton harvest.

Elena is a brave human rights defender standing up for the rights of all Uzbek citizens. Please stand with us in demanding she be released! (https://laborrights.z2systems.com/track//servlet/DisplayLink?orgId=laborrights&emailId=45c13bc839d9dc613bdffc4fd1c570494m66002464 5c&secureId=OF4U7VVi3j9CIpB8xe%2FIjw%3D%3D&linkId=15142&targetUrl=https://laborrights.z2systems.com/np/clients/laborrights/survey.jsp?surveyId=33&=)

This is not the first time the Uzbek government has tried to silence Elena for her activism. She has been detained several times each year in the course of her monitoring work, and in 2001, 2005, 2012 and 2016 was subjected to punitive compulsory psychiatric imprisonment, even though she has been found to be of sound mind.

Do not let this critical independent voice be silenced! Join us in demanding the Uzbek government release Elena Urlaeva immediately! campaign success - rights defender Elena Urlaeva released!

International campaign wins release for Uzbekistan rights defender Elena Urlaeva

Elena Urlaeva was released on March 24 after 23 days of forced psychiatric 'treatment', a success for the international campaign on her behalf.

Urlaeva, who has a long history of arrest and abuse at the hands of the government, was detained by police on March 1 to prevent a scheduled meeting with representatives of the International Trade Union Confederation and the World Bank, at which she planned to discuss the problem of human trafficking in Uzbekistan. Thousands of people around the world rallied to her defense, sending messages to the authorities demanding her release.
