Donald Trump's presidency could exacerbate the crisis for working people across the country.

Since Election Day, Republican lawmakers in Congress and state legislatures have been aggressively pushing right-to-work laws. Theyre paving the way for corporations to increase their power in workplaces and state and national politics.

And now, Donald Trumps press secretary has indicated the president believes in right-to-work and he wants to do whats in the best interest of job creators.

These policies wont lead to more manufacturing plants or better jobs. They will only lead to weaker unions, less bargaining power for working people, and lower wages for union and nonunion workers alike.

We all benefit from strong unions of working people who bring about a better standard of living not just for union members. Politicians and CEOs pushing right to work want to weaken unions and increase corporate profits because their goal is to make the rich richer.

Sign the petition today telling congressional and state lawmakers that right to work is bad for your state and bad for the country. (http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=CGniXnxcOkyANDVizb2NX91ei7%2FNE4mn)

To: All Members of Congress and State Lawmakers

Working people in right-to-work states earn at least $6,000 less than other people on average. And EPI research shows that, even after controlling for other differences between states like the cost of living, people in right-to-work states still earn 3.2 percent less or $1,558 less per year. So-called right-to-work laws lower the wages of everyone who works for a living union and nonunion alike. Pushed by corporate lobbyists and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the only real purpose of so-called right-to-work laws is to lower wages and weaken unions. We demand that you stand up for workers rights and oppose right-to-work laws in Congress and in your state.

Thanks for the post. This is an important issue for everyone who believes in worker's rights. I live in a "right to work state". All that means is employers have the right to replace you with scabs if you strike. The only real power the worker has is to withhold his/her labor. This is a blatant attempt to deal the final blow to the US labor movement.

Tell Congress to protect overtime pay for working people

Take action.

Dear Chris,

It should be straightforward: if youre paid hourly and work more than 40 hours a week, you get overtime payright?

But some Members of Congress want to allow bosses to steal overtime pay from working women and their familiesall under the false pretense of flexibility. Let them know you arent fooled.

Tell Congress Not to Steal Overtime Pay from Working People (http://action.nwlc.org/site/R?i=Yt-NlUjrGtRsJO30PaDqmw)
Demand that your Representative reject the misleadingly named Working Families Flexibility Act.

TAKE ACTION NOW (http://action.nwlc.org/site/R?i=eQYfJqunResa4Wz0DqU6Ww)

Overtime protections allow working people to boost their paychecks while encouraging bosses not to overwork their employees. The so-called Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1180) would allow bosses to deny employees overtime pay with the promise of comp timepaid time off in the futureinstead. But the catch is that employers dont have to offer any guarantees that employees can use the time off to care for their families or themselves when they need it. Although the politicians behind this bill say it will help working people, we see it for what it really is: a way for bosses to squeeze more hours out of their employees without paying them fairly.

Help us stop this bill in its tracks: tell your Representative to oppose H.R. 1180. (http://action.nwlc.org/site/R?i=EZRyD0Trxj9oZcZ24EHKbA)

Well never stop fighting for policies that promote fair pay and help women balance the demands of work and familyincluding overtime protections, paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, fair work schedules, strong equal pay laws, and an increased minimum wage. Thank you for fighting with us.

Sincerely,
Emily Martin

Why America needs a $15 minimum wage

Who would benefit from a $15 minimum wage?

Since 2009, the federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25. In a new report (http://epi.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ec2361f981a14ee1d45cccaa9&id=470a02e95a&e=73ae589068), EPIs David Cooper looks at the impact of the Raise the Wage Act of 2017, which would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2024, link it to changes in the median wage thereafter, and gradually eliminate the lower minimum wage for tipped workers. Cooper finds the proposed bill would benefit 41.5 million workersnearly 30 percent of the workforce. What I told Congress on your behalf:

Dear Chris,

I am deeply disappointed that the House just passed the badly misnamed Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1180) or the so-called comp time bill.

It's a complete sham a deceptive bill that would eliminate our right to overtime pay, taking money out of the hands of hardworking people in the short term while giving more power to employers. The Senate should refuse to even consider it.

At the National Partnership, we work hard every day, standing strong for women and families and giving voice to those marginalized by the anti-woman, anti-worker, anti-immigrant agenda the Trump administration and House Republicans are advancing.

That's why I wrote this op-ed "Working families need higher wages and guaranteed time to care, not smoke and mirrors (http://go.nationalpartnership.org/site/R?i=dJiUxJHBtIYoeruXmmlwYg)" (The Hill) and was asked to testify at a congressional briefing earlier this month.

Vicki Shabo Testifying

Here's what I told members Congress:

At a time when our nations working families urgently need public policies that make our workplaces more fair and family friendly, H.R. 1180 is an empty promise a cruel hoax that would take the country in the wrong direction. It would make life appreciably harder for families that are already struggling. No amount of misleading or deceptive rhetoric can soften the blow. For many workers, H.R. 1180 would bring less pay, less flexibility and workplaces that are even less family friendly.

Instead of wasting time on smoke and mirrors to try to hide the real impact of this bill which will cause grievous injury to the millions of people across the country who are looking for hope and opportunity, economic security and higher wages I urge you instead to support updates to the minimum wage and overtime protections for eligible workers, promote fair pay through the Paycheck Fairness Act, extend access to time to care through the Healthy Families Act, the FAMILY Act and FMLA expansions, and promote scheduling predictability through the Schedules That Work Act. These are the advances the nation needs and the public wants. These are the initiatives that would help our nations workers and their families, employers, communities and our economy.

Chris, with your support, the National Partnership will not slow down, and we will continue fighting the good fight.

Were in this for the long haul. Together.

Please stay tuned for urgent actions you can take during the next 100 days (and beyond).

Our resistance will and must continue.

Thank you!
