Chris,
Trump just signed three executive orders that make his threat, to "send the Feds" to Chicago, even more real and dangerous.1
While swearing in Jeff Sessions--a known racist--as Attorney General yesterday, Trump doubled down on his agenda targeting Black communities, amping up local police, and touting a national law persecuting anyone seen as a threat to police. He even said, “a new era of justice begins, and it begins right now.”2
When Trump stripped federal funds from sanctuary cities, Rahm Emanuel and mayors across the country vowed to protect immigrant communities.3 But when Trump lied about national crime and threatened to literally send forces into Chicago--as if Black people are enemy combatants--Emanuel actually said he'd welcome them in.4
Chicago can't be a sanctuary if Emanuel partners with Trump to criminalize Black communities. He needs to choose a side: standing by his vow or standing with Trump.
Chicago is Trump’s ground-zero to test his powers to terrorize Black communities that don’t stand with him. But if Chicago Mayor Emanuel stands boldly against Trump’s racist law and order agenda in this moment, it will send a shockwave to stop these "tough on crime" tactics across the country.
Tell Mayor Rahm Emanuel: Oppose any expanded role of federal law enforcement in Chicago. (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/chicago-no-feds/?t=3&akid=6969.872082.cUalcw)
Trump is using lies and propaganda to justify his plan of terror and to scare people into thinking that crime is at an all-time high—when we know the facts say the opposite. Just a few days ago, Trump lied and said, “the murder rate is the highest we’ve seen in 45 years.”5 This is FAR from the truth. Nationally, the murder rate is near a record low and is less than HALF the peak rate of the past 45 years. On top of that, all violent crimes are down 19 percent.6
Then, last month in a nationally televised interview, Trump said two people were shot and killed during President Barack Obama's farewell speech in Chicago. But police records showed that was a lie too.7 No one was fatally shot in Chicago for about 24 hours before or after the speech. Yet instead of pushing back against these lies and Trump’s threat to “send in the Feds,” Rahm Emanuel actually said "just send them"--despite his claims to be a progressive and declare Chicago a “Sanctuary City.”8
We need to hold Rahm Emanuel accountable to his word to protect vulnerable communities. Tell him: Reject Trump’s law and order agenda. (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/chicago-no-feds/?t=4&akid=6969.872082.cUalcw)
Trump’s executive orders are vague on purpose and take a play from Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan's playbook--using racialized myths about crime and drugs to spark the rise of another 'tough on crime' and 'War on Drugs' era.9 They suggest instituting mandatory minimums on "crimes against law enforcement" which could be anything as simple as asserting one's right to film a police officer. And they order the Department of Justice, which Sessions will be leading, to find ways to "reduce crime" and reassess funding to local law enforcement. This vagueness only allows Trump and Sessions more leverage in how they can enact these orders.
It's yet another plot against America by a racist man who wants to squeeze his grip even tighter on our democracy through a ‘law and order’ agenda that demonizes Black communities, bolsters anti-police accountability groups like the Fraternal Order of Police, and funnels millions into the private prison companies that helped fund his campaign. And while we know the devastating and lasting effects the "War on Drugs" had on Black families and communities--Trump’s agenda is bound to birth even harsher punishments and violence against our people.
Our communities are already over-policed. And studies show that violent tactics like "stop and frisk" and "broken-window policing" don’t equal safety.10 If anything, heavy policing makes our communities less safe. At the same time that Trump claims police officers face rampant violence, it’s actually Black people who are facing record violence at the hands of police. Last month we saw the highest number of people killed by police in any single month since 2015.11 The last thing we need is a racist in Washington, DC bolstering the power of law enforcement and making them more dangerous.
Together, we can stop Trump's vicious persecution of Black communities before it even starts. Sign the petition. (https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/chicago-no-feds/?t=5&akid=6969.872082.cUalcw)
