(WASHINGTON DC 01/24/2017) – The American Muslims for Palestine, a national education organization, is alarmed by President Trump’s pledge to immediately lay the groundwork to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which would signal tacit approval for Israel’s complete annexation of the city holy to members of the three Abrahamic faiths. While he would not be able to move the embassy until June when the waiver signed by President Obama runs out, it is imperative to act now before it’s too late.
Even though Congress passed a bill in 1995 allowing for the U.S. embassy to be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, each president since has signed a waiver every six months prohibiting the action. In fact, the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel holds this law to be unconstitutional, and all presidents since Bill Clinton have viewed it as an infringement by Congress on the presidential powers of the executive branch. Moving the embassy to East Jerusalem would inflame tensions in the region, throughout the Arab and Muslim worlds and would significantly weaken the U.S.’ stance in the international arena. It would also threaten Americans national security.
When the United Nations partitioned Palestine in 1947, Jerusalem was to be designated as a separate entity – the corpus separatum – and it was to be administered by the UN Trusteeship Council. But Israel rejected this outright and has claimed Jerusalem as its ‘eternal and undivided capital’ ever since. In 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and has been in the process of eliminating the rich Palestinian Muslim and Christian heritage there in a process called ‘Judaization.’ Israeli authorities have been increasingly moving in Jewish settlers while at the same time revoking Palestinian residency.
The embassies for the entire international community reside in Tel Aviv, the official capital of Israel. If Trump moves the US embassy from there to Jerusalem he will be breaking with more than 50 years of U.S. policy. American, European and even Israel authorities all have said that moving the embassy to Jerusalem would inflame tensions in the Middle East. AMP asserts it will also weaken our credibility among our global partners and threaten our national security.
TAKE ACTION
Reports indicate that Trump may be slowing down on his campaign promise but we can't take any chances. The time to act is now!
Contact the White House today and demand President Trump leaves his hands off the U.S. embassy. Note: The comments office at the White House, which includes the comments line, currently is shut down. An operator said staff have “not been given guidance on the exact date,” the office will open.

TALKING POINTS
Neither the U.S. nor the international community accepts the outcome of Israel’s 1967 war, which resulted in the occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
United Nations Resolution 242 recognizes the occupation – including that of East Jerusalem – as illegal. This was confirmed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 in December 2016.
U.S. policy views East Jerusalem as disputed territory, whose final status should be determined thorough negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
International law and the global community consider Jerusalem occupied territory and see it as the future capital of a Palestinian state.
Moving the embassy to Jerusalem will send a message to Palestinians that the United States does not care about their self-determination or Palestinian statehood and this could inflame tensions.
Moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be a definite obstacle to peace.
Moving the embassy to Jerusalem contravenes nearly ½ century of U.S. policy and will weaken this country’s credibility among our international partners.
Moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem could weaken the U.S. position in the Muslim and Arab worlds and threaten our national security.
