Efia Nwangaza
Your Action Needed! Drop the Charges on Efia Nwangaza!
Fighting the Genocide of Police Terror is NO CRIME!
Greenville SC -- Efia Nwangaza, director of the Malcolm X Center for Self-Determination, and a leader of the Stop Mass Incarceration Network in South Carolina, is going on trial on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. She is facing 30 days for organizing determined, and nonviolent, civil protests in blocking traffic in December 2014 in the aftermath of the non-indictment of Darren Wilson -- the killer cop who killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and the non-indictment of Daniel Panteleo -- the killer cop who strangled Eric Garner on Staten Island, New York.
In 2014 and 2015, the nation saw a surge of protest and outrage against the runaway epidemic of police terror around the country. On December 1, 2014, Efia organized a mass blockage of traffic in Greenville, South Carolina. In that protest, nearly a dozen persons were arrested, and they were issued tickets for blocking the roadway. Efia refused to accept a deal because her actions to organize civil disobedience were necessitated beyond the normal means of merely writing to the mayor or to one’s congressional representative. In other words, in face of so many killer police walking free after killing a Black or brown person, society had to be “inconvenienced” because an alarm had to be rung.
In an email to supporters from around the country, Efia wrote on Monday evening: “On Wed. 1/25, I will be tried on the charge of "Pedestrian in the Roadway," blocking traffic, shutting down a main city intersection, on December 1, 2014. The shut down was a part of the national days-after protests in response to Ferguson grand jury's refusal to indict Darren Wilson for the murder of Mike Brown.”
More than ever, in face of the ascendancy of a fascist Trump/Pence regime, there are high stakes involved here. People taking righteous and determined stands against the escalating genocide of Black and brown people must be defended as killer cops continue to walk.
Call the offices of Greenville City Attorney Bob Coler (864-467-4418) and Mayor Knox White (864-467-4590) to demand that the charge against Efia Nwangaza be dropped!

An Evening with author Heather Thompson
reading from her new book
Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy
Where: Revolution Books NYC, 437 Malcolm X Blvd @ 132nd, Harlem NY
How: 2/3 train to 135th Street
Heather Thompson is a native Detroiter and historian on faculty of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her recent book, Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy, has been profiled on television and radio programs across the country, was named a finalist for the National Book Award, has been named on 13 Best Books of 2016 lists including those compiled by The New York Times, Newsweek, Kirkus Review, the Boston Globe, Publishers Weekly, Bloomberg, the Marshall Project, the Baltimore City Paper, Book Scroll, and the Christian Science Monitor.
In September 1971, 1300 inmates, Black, Latino and white, seized control of the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York. The rebellion was caused by incredibly cruel conditions of overcrowding, lack of medical treatment, routine beatings by guards, and systematic racism. The uprising lasted 4 days. The prisoners raised demands for humane treatment, expressed solidarity with liberation struggles in other parts of the world, and took guards hostage.
Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy is Heather Ann Thompson's definitive and widely praised account. Thompson tracked down hidden files -- some of which have since disappeared -- and unearthed even more damning information about how calculated this bloodbath was. She tells the story in riveting prose.
Attica became synonymous with the cruelty of the system and the heroism of those who dared to rise up. A new generation needs to learn about it. And everyone who cares about justice needs to dig into its lessons.
