I am an activist in the Lebanese You Stink movement. Yesterday I had a discussion/argument with an acquaintance from another movement called "We Want Accountability" about the use of violence by protesters, she believe that violence is a necessary tool to achieve a Marxian utopia.

23 August 2015: "You Stink" organized a demonstration which had more than 50 thousand people attend. Around 200 youngsters between the ages of 14 and 22 throw rocks, bottles filled with sand , fire crackers , dynamite , and molotovs at the police , this made the police respond with arresting both violent and peaceful protesters with 400 injuries on both sides. Next week more people showed up in the rallies.
20 September 2015: A peaceful march took place from Bourj Hammoud Dumpsite to the parliament circumference we were attacked by thugs , but the police saw us being peaceful they arrested the thugs , and let us enter the parliament.

In Lebanon, where police officers are not paid enough in accordance with the standard of living. The ruling elite, exploit the officers and they have to follow their orders even if they are unlawful in order to keep their job, and to put food on their tables. And if a citizen perpetuates violence on a police officer, or soldier, or coast guard personnel, the consequences are very severe under Lebanese law. In addition, the ruling class can replace the officer, if he/she got injured or killed.
In conclusion, violence would not get us anywhere, we should negotiate with the police force, when I was distributing fliers I used to get asked by patrolling officers and they tell me that they are on our side and suffering , and to never use violence against them. During protests I saw many them crying , and having a break down. To win, the revolution is to get the Police and the Army on our side because they are proletarian, and have military combat skills maybe they can teach civilians how to defend themselves.

One you understand that you are the victim of constant systemic violence then it is obvious that the only answer is violent self defense.

A cop pulling a gun on you should be thought of no differently then a "criminal" or any other attacker. The laws that the cops uphold treated no differently then any racketeering or extortion scheme.

If a mobster told you to pay him or he would kidnap you and make you his slave; would you be just in using violence to defend yourself?
Well government taxing you/enforcing laws and imprisoning you if you dont obey is not at all different then a "criminal" doing the same.

Violence is part of history, but those who glorify violence have issues. Rosa Luxemburg and Antonio Gramsci were generally correct.
