People have contacted us asking if the protest is still on after seeing headlines like ”Mount Greenwood Residents & Black Activists Say They've Made Amends” after a Wednesday night meeting in Mt. Greenwood with local residents, police and some Black activists.
Yes, absolutely, the protest against white supremacy in Mt. Greenwood WILL HAPPEN on Sunday and everyone with a conscience needs to be there.
Yesterday there was a press conference about the protest. Speakers were: Gregg Greer, Minister, social activist, and editor of "One World" internet journal. Greer is also the Founder of Freedom First International*; Rev. John Smith MDiv, Beverly Unitarian Church*; Ted Jennings, Chicago Theological Seminary*; and Dee Williams, Revolution Club.
Let us be clear, the vicious mob threats and spewing of racial epithets at Joshua Beal’s grieving family and protesters is a national flashpoint in the whole fight over Black life in America. It was a violent reassertion of white supremacy in a cop-heavy community under the banner of “Blue Lives Matter.” Meanwhile nationally, Trump has whipped up racism and hatred of a rising fascist movement -- the mob was chanting “Trump, Trump”. Many more people must not only speak out, but stand up and protest on Sunday to send the message that this must stop! We refuse to accept racist white supremacy!
Because this protest is mobilizing people in Chicago to do just that, it is causing a problem for the powers-that-be. Right now, they are trying to lure people into thinking that somehow the state-backed genocidal violence of the police against Black and Latino people can be “healed” by dialogue or policy changes. They are trying to tell everybody that it’s “all under control, don’t worry about it” and go back to the business as usual where police can kill with impunity and are almost never punished. This protest is occurring as Archbishop Cupich is being made a Cardinal in Rome this very weekend, so they desperately want to avoid an international spotlight on this ugly picture of America. Mt. Greenwood is a heavily Catholic neighborhood.
If the powers-that-be are forced to rein in the white supremacists temporarily and they don’t show up to counter-protest on Sunday, that would be a victory. But it would be won because the people have stood up to and stood firm in the face of the racist mobs, not because of some “dialogue” with those mobs. People should be aware that at the same time that “Blue Lives Matter” is supposedly putting forward “reconciliation,” Black activists are being told by police that the situation on Sunday will be dangerous and are receiving death threats and vicious racist messages on social media.
We welcome everyone to the protest on Sunday who opposes white supremacy, including white people from Mt. Greenwood. And indeed, everyone who opposes white supremacy must stand up against it. We think these words from Dee Williams from the Revolution Club at the press conference Thursday are worth sharing: “This [dialogue] must be based on two things: 1) the repudiation of the lynch mob response to the Beal family and protesters, and 2) there is no room for unity with the police. The police are the enforcers of this system. They are getting away with murder day in and day out. Many in this racist mob told us they were family of police and I am convinced many were off-duty police officers. This exposed the ugly reality of the mentality behind the badges they wear.”
History has shown that you must go to where the attacks are the ugliest and the sharpest if you want to turn the tide of history. To fight Jim Crow, people had to march in Selma. We need to fight this ugly racism here and now and prevent this country from becoming like Nazi Germany, where too many terrified people turned away from the ugly reality of what was going on until is was too late.
