This is taken from a private liberal messageboard I troll.

The best course of action is for the Dems to 'bait' Trump and coax him into 'moderation' by working with him. The GOP's electorate/demographic problem hasn't gone away. And the temptation to informally bail on him by 2020 in favour of Cruzlite will be suicidal.

This course (which will inevitably be the one the DNC pursues) will absolutely emasculate the Democratic Party's potential to be a site of genuine opposition to the regime.

Yes, Trump will pursue "populist" infrastructure projects - at the expense of environmental protections and labor rights; Trump International Airport will be built according to the same standards as the Burj Khalifa.

Yes, Trump will ensure the existence of some minimum quantum of welfare - deployed in a cynical, selective way to buy off the working class. In the worst-case scenario, that welfare State liberals are so incredibly proud of will be transformed into an overt system of social control: rebel and we cut off your child's cancer treatments.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party is virtually guaranteed to put up a fake "Cruzite" primary "challenge" regardless, all the better to herd the Trump coalition back together in defense of "populism". And, unsurprisingly, liberals will be rooting for the "Good Cop" against the Bad Cop.

The dominant discourse among liberal media indicates they'll be taking the opposite approach, trying to capitalize on the populism they rejected. Bernie is currently spearheading a reform of the party, and many Democrats might have no choice but to go along.

Yeah, I know. That's the problem: Trump currently occupies the "populist" spotlight. The Congressional Republicans, however, do not.

What's going to end up happening is that Trump is going to make the Democrats junior partners in his government on the basis of "populism", while playing off against the looming threat of the Congressional GOP and the Ryan budget looming like the sword of Damocles over the heart of the American economy.

Trump will get to play the "Good Cop" against the "Bad Cop" of his own Party. And the newfound "populism" of the Democratic Party will enable him to do that.
