If you're not in the Midwest and can't make it to Detroit, organize a solidarity event in your city!

WHEN: Tuesday, November 29th, 2016, changed to 8 AM Eastern Standard Time (rally at 8 AM, hearing starts at 9 AM)

WHERE: U.S. District Court, 231 W. Lafayette Blvd., downtown Detroit, Michigan

The Rasmea Defense Committee is calling on everyone to mobilize for Detroit on November 29th, and tell us here (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=73d740a1c6&e=266d74dd41) that you're attending or if you need a ride or if you can provide transportation!

Supporters from Chicago and other parts of Illinois, Milwaukee, Detroit / Dearborn, Grand Rapids, Minneapolis / St. Paul, Cincinnati, Indiana, and other Midwest areas are already committed to attend.

In addition, NY is organizing a solidarity action (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=dac42ec377&e=266d74dd41) on November 28th, Harvard Law School is discussing the case (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=db45d1316b&e=266d74dd41) on November 11th, and others in Florida, Texas, and California are planning actions as well.

If you are NOT in the Midwest, we are calling on you to also organize support events for Rasmea on or around November 29th. Again, it is the most important hearing in the case, and it also falls on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, so there may already be Palestine support forces near you that are organizing events we can join with Rasmea's story.

Let us know once it's scheduled, by emailing [email protected]

And continue to support #Justice4Rasmea by donating to the defense (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=29ba2b846e&e=266d74dd41), and staying in touch through justice4rasmea.org and [email protected]

Background:

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Rasmea Odeh will once again be in a Detroit courtroom—this time for the most important hearing in her case to date—before Judge Gershwin Drain. This Daubert hearing will, in all likelihood, have two mental health experts from each of the prosecution and defense sides testify before the judge, and then he will hear legal arguments as to whether the testimony of Dr. Mary Fabri—the clinical psychologist from the world-renowned Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture, who diagnosed Rasmea's Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)—is scientifically valid and applicable to the facts of the case.

https://gallery.mailchimp.com/50f24014e5eab7c0b4aef517d/images/77272127-3ee8-4543-82e0-e576b2ad73bc.jpg

Recall that before the 2014 trial, Dr. Fabri, who has worked with torture survivors for over 25 years, was prepared to testify as to how Rasmea’s PTSD, caused by the torture and rape she experienced at the hands of Israeli military interrogators in 1969, affected her answers to questions on complex immigration forms decades later in the U.S.

Judge Drain originally ruled her testimony irrelevant and inadmissible, which led to Rasmea’s unjust conviction; but earlier this year, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that he had erred, and sent the case back to him for the Daubert hearing.

Recently, Rasmea was subjected to 17 hours of mental examination by a government expert. Her defense had argued strongly to oppose this questioning prior to the November 29th hearing, but Judge Drain still allowed it. Even though the government continues to try to challenge Rasmea’s story, and claim that she does not have PTSD and did not get brutalized by the Israeli authorities in the 60s and 70s, Rasmea remains steadfast and strong, and will continue to exercise her constitutional right to assert a meaningful defense.

Rasmea and her lawyers are confident that the results of this hearing will lead to a new trial sometime in early 2017, in which Dr. Fabri will testify before a jury, and the details of Israel's torture and crimes against Rasmea will be heard. But if Judge Drain rules against her on November 29th, we will again appeal the decision.

That is why we are mobilizing heavy for this hearing. It is as important a moment as any we have had in the case.

From the beginning, the Rasmea Defense Committee has pointed out that the legal proceedings against Rasmea are nothing but a pretext to intimidate those who organize and struggle to realize a liberated Palestine. Demonstrations in support of her have taken place across the U.S. since her arrest in 2013, and we are again going All Out for Detroit on November 29th.

The Rasmea Defense Committee (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=5ea59d9d82&e=266d74dd41) is led by the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=12779537ec&e=266d74dd41) and the Committee to Stop FBI Repression (http://uspcn.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ce8bf015c0d49d11d99fdefb&id=9e443ca34d&e=266d74dd41)

Harvard students demand "Justice for Rasmea! (http://fightbacknews.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=a29530af96a02fc55d345e735&id=19b93d70e9&e=d323598fe4)

Cambridge, MA - Harvard students held an event in honor of Palestinian freedom fighter Rasmea Odeh, Oct. 11. The event, titled "Justice for Rasmea Odeh!" was well attended and featured comments by Suzanne Adely of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG).

The organizers framed the discussion in the context of a history of national oppression of Palestinians and government repression of anti-war organizers. "In many ways, Rasmea's story is the story of the Palestinian people," said event host Collin Poirot of Harvard NLG and Justice for Palestine.

Adely's presentation situated Rasmea's case in a long history of U.S. government surveillance and repression. Adely brought up the cases of Amer Jubran and Muhammad Salah, who were also targeted by the U.S. government for their leadership in the Palestinian liberation struggle and their opposition to imperialism.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of social movements and activism in support of Rasmea Odeh. "The importance of organizing and building activist support cannot be overstated," Adely stated.

Organizers have already won significant victories in the campaign for Odeh. Not only have her supporters made Odeh a nationally known figure in the anti-war movement, but they were also able to build pressure and get Odeh out of solitary confinement during the appeal of her case.

Significantly, organizers forced Odeh’s first judge to step down from the case. Odeh's supporters have put out a national call to action for her next court date, Nov. 29, when the judge will decide whether to allow expert therapist Mary Fabri to testify about the effect of Odeh’s torture at the hands of the Israelis. All supporters who are able to attend the hearing are strongly encouraged to do so.

For supporters who cannot make it to the hearing, the Rasmea Defense Committee is asking students and community organizers to hold events and protests raising awareness about Odeh’s case. Please send details about any events you have planned to [email protected] so that the organizers in Detroit can use it in their advocacy. You can find out more about Odeh’s case and other ways to get involved at www.justice4rasmea.org.

Free Them All! Political Prisoners & Anti-Imperialist Resistance

Call to Action - Support Political Prisoners Today!

View this email in your browser (http://us4.campaign-archive1.com/?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=7b1328f41f&e=f269152a76)

To protectors of the land, indigenous freedom fighters, and defenders against colonialism: we stand in joint struggle with you as our work for abolition of the prison industrial complex is necessarily tied to anti-imperialist efforts. Imprisonment, policing, and surveillance are tools for social control that allow the perpetuation of colonial efforts and racialized capitalism. We pay homage to political prisoners who are held captive by the state for fighting against the ongoing land theft and genocide. Their imprisonment is a direct attack on movements to free the people and land from colonialism - including Puerto Rican national struggles, ongoing indigenous resistance such as at Standing Rock (http://criticalresistance.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b64cbc94231b3bae71ab83686&id=484c290a09&e=f269152a76), and the New Afrikan independence movement.

As many people across the US gather with their loved ones today, we keep in mind that this day has been used to whitewash the enslavement and genocide of the indigenous people of this land, as well as their ongoing struggle for self-determination. Additionally, we remember the 2.3 million imprisoned people denied the ability to be with their loved ones in freedom on this day and every day, and the additional 4 million people on parole and probation who may have their travel restricted.

Political imprisonment is used for coercion, control, and domination over social and political movements. The steadfastness of our political prisoner comrades reminds us to continue our efforts until the people and land are free.

We encourage you to take a moment today to sign the below clemency petitions and demand Obama to take action in his final days. The Rasmea Defense Committee just now got word from Rasmea’s defense attorneys that Judge Gershwin Drain cancelled the Daubert hearing that was scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, November 29th, in Detroit.

We have no idea what this means, besides the simple fact that the judge will be rendering a written decision without hearing arguments. We will report this decision to you as soon as we receive it.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause those incredible supporters who have committed to travel to Detroit from all across the country. Please understand that we just received this information an hour ago.

Stay in touch at justice4rasmea.org and uspcn.org.

Tampa rallies for Rasmea Odeh (http://fightbacknews.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a29530af96a02fc55d345e735&id=7f5bfd915e&e=d323598fe4)

By Jessica Schwartz

Tampa, FL – The Tampa Anti-War Committee (TAWC) held a sign-waving for Rasmea Odeh on the day of her scheduled hearing, Nov. 29. The Daubert hearing, which would have been to discuss the use of expert testimony regarding the torture of Odeh during her time in an Israeli prison, was canceled the day before , but TAWC followed through with the action to demand #Justice4Rasmea on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Community and student activists held signs and chanted in solidarity with Odeh. Chants included “Hey, hey, let’s be clear: Rasmea is welcome here!” “FBI, off our backs! We have had enough attacks!” and “When Rasmea is under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!”

Sam Alex of TAWC spoke about Odeh’s case and why anti-war activists should support and defend her. “Rasmea is on trial for ridiculous, trumped-up charges due to her work as a Palestinian civil rights leader and activist,” said Alex. “We must always fight for Rasmea Odeh and the Palestinian people, especially on today. TAWC supports all of this because we always support the oppressed, not the oppressor.”

TAWC will also be holding a General Body Meeting Wednesday, Nov. 30 to discuss Odeh’s case, as well as other cases of political repression. For more information regarding upcoming events, you can find TAWC on Facebook, or e-mail [email protected]
