I have to warn you, the details below are difficult to read, which only intensifies the need to act now.

Dear Chris,

For years, Mustafa al-Hawsawi has lived with agonizing pain arising from his torture by the U.S. government. Now, thanks to you, that's beginning to change.

"You made a difference in my client's life: This torture survivor has gotten a surgery he desperately needed to alleviate excruciating pain." - Walter Ruiz, lawyer for Mustafa al-Hawsawi at Guantánamo.

Mustafa was sodomized by U.S. government agents, who held him in secret prisons before sending him to Guantánamo. He's still there now, and for years he has suffered from a gruesome condition that was a daily reminder of his torture. Every time he defecated or strained, he was forced, in spite of excruciating pain, to manually re-insert the prolapsing tissue back into his rectal cavity with his fingers.

His lawyers have been struggling for years to get the U.S. government to provide him medical attention to address this.

So when Amnesty International USA offered to lend our help, they were thrilled. "We knew that activists like you could help change his life," Ruiz said.

Now it's finally happening. Mustafa received a surgery earlier this month. He is on the road to recovery of his health. It's a long road, but he is on it.

Still, as I write you, Guantánamo remains open. Mustafa is one of 60 people who are still languishing there.

President Obama has less than 100 days left to close Guantánamo before he leaves office. He must get the job done. Otherwise, the prison could stay open indefinitely. Systematic torture could return. We just don't know what the next president will do.

Voices like yours are critical. Your activism made the difference for Mustafa. Now, it can make the differences for all the individuals still held at Guantánamo.

Thank you for speaking out for human dignity, and against torture.

Sincerely,
Naureen Shah
