National Renters' Day of Action in Chicago

The September 22, 2016 National Renters’ Day of Action in Chicago was a success that laid a strong basis for expanded actions. It revealed a new battlefront against capital property which profits from the propertyless. “I believe that today is the beginning of an historic moment to create a renter power movement across the nation”, renter and Autonomous Tenants Union representative Antonio Gutierrez told Labor Beat.

Under the watchful eyes of the Picasso statue in Daley Plaza, moving testimonies were offered by a spectrum of renters and displaced homeowners cruelly abused by laws that favor developers and landlords: from homeless retirees to an African-American mother whose young son, standing next to her, suffers now from irreversible lead poisoning due to Chicago’s inadequate home inspection program. Property over people. The organizers of the event proposed a Chicago Healthy Homes Inspection Program and detailed other proposed ordinances.

Tent Cities, Stand Your Ground

Chicago’s Uptown is know for its ethnic and economic diversity. On Oct. 3, 2016 Uptown Tent City Organizers and other housing, homeless and anti-racist groups did a press conference near the Wilson Avenue viaduct under Lake Shore Drive, where homeless tents are set up. They denounced the offensive launched by wealthy property developers to push out homeless and low-income residents from the 46th Ward. The police have made sweeps and confiscated homeless property, while funding for shelters has been gutted. Meanwhile, the City finds millions of dollars to militarized the police and siphon off taxpayer money for wealthy high-rises. There was also a march to and occupation of Alderman Cappleman’s office in the 46th Ward where their demands were presented and rejected.

Andy Thayer of Uptown Tent City Organizers explained why folks need to join this fight. “Not only the low-income, but everyone who is part of the 99% will benefit. When you destroy low-income housing, it’s market capitalism. You have many more people chasing fewer units, and everybody’s rent goes up."
