Dear Friends,

The Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression is proud to present Attorney Lennox S. Hinds as keynote speaker at our annual Human Rights Awards Dinner and Program on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church, 600 East 35th St. (corner of 35th St. and Cottage Grove Ave.). This year’s theme, “Supporting CPAC (Civilian Police Accountability Council): Democracy in Action” describes the work we are doing to get legislation that establishes an elected body to determine police policy and practices with the power to hire and fire officers starting with the Superintendent.

Attorney Hinds is a widely known criminal defense and international human rights lawyer. He was Nelson Mandela’s US attorney and is counsel in the US to the government of South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa and is the permanent Representative to the United Nations for the International Association of Democratic Lawyers. He served for many years as National Director of the National Conference of Black Lawyers of the US and Canada, and he has represented unpopular clients, including Assata Shakur and victims of police brutality.

This year, three outstanding women are recipients of the Charlene Mitchell Human Rights Award. The award is named for Charlene Mitchell, the founding Executive Director of the Alliance and the leader of the original United National Committees to Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners.

Sarah Chambers, Special Education teacher, member of the Executive Board and Bargaining Unit of the Chicago Teachers Union, Co-Chair of CORE (Caucus of Rank and file Educators) and Board member of United Working Families.

Rasmea Odeh, Palestinian-American leader in the Arab community of Chicago, Black-Palestinian Solidarity leader, currently fighting back against a racist political frame-up.

Fannie Theresa Rushing, Professor of History and Global Studies at Benedictine University and Co-Chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) History Project, has worked for human rights for more than 50 years.

We ask you to join us on September 24th. Bring a friend(s). We need your support.

Yours in struggle,

Clarice Durham Ted Pearson Josephine Wyatt
