Chelsea Manning ends 5 day hunger strike after Army agrees to medical treatment

https://www.chelseamanning.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/hunger_strike_ends-e1473813733788.png

Chelsea Manning ended her hunger strike today (Sept 13) after the Army finally agreed to treatment for her gender dysphoria.

"This is all that I wanted – for them to let me be me,” said Chelsea Manning.

“But it is hard not to wonder why it has taken so long and why such drastic measures were needed in order to get this help that was recommended.”

Chelsea was shown a memo today stating she will receive gender-reassignment surgery under the DoD’s new policy affecting transgender service members.

If this occurs, Manning will be the first trans prisoner in the US to receive this treatment, setting a precedent that could benefit thousands of transgender inmates.

“This medical care is absolutely vital for Chelsea. It was the government’s refusal to provide her with necessary care that led her to attempt suicide earlier this year,” said Chase Strangio, Chelsea’s attorney at the ACLU, “and it was all the more troubling when she became subject to an investigation and possible punishment in connection with the suicide attempt.

We hope that the government recognizes that charging Chelsea with the crime of being denied essential health care is outrageous and drops those charges.” Read more here (https://www.chelseamanning.org/uncategorized/chelsea-ends-hunger-strike)

Daniel Ellsberg, Michael Stipe protest
inhumane charges against Chelsea

https://www.chelseamanning.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/stipe_ellsberg.jpg

After years of inhumane treatment from the Army, Chelsea Manning attempted to take her life on July 5th, 2016.

Although happy to be alive, Chelsea is now facing disciplinary charges from the Army related to her own suicide attempt. (https://www.chelseamanning.org/featured/facinglifeinsolitary)

Read more here (https://www.chelseamanning.org/featured/ellsberg-stipe-videos-for-chelsea)

If convicted of these absurd “administrative offenses”, Chelsea could face indefinite solitary confinement for the rest of her prison term (30 years).

Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg and musician Michael Stipe released videos today in support of Chelsea. (https://www.chelseamanning.org/featured/ellsberg-stipe-videos-for-chelsea)

Daniel Ellsberg: “I stand with Chelsea Manning. I hope you will too.”
Michael Stipe: “I support human rights for all people. As an American patriot it is my duty to stand with Chelsea Manning... This is unjustifiable. It is unfair, and it needs to be stopped.” Read more and watch the videos (https://www.chelseamanning.org/featured/ellsberg-stipe-videos-for-chelsea)

Chelsea will face a disciplinary board later this month, and could very likely be charged for her own suicide attempt.

Sign the petition and demand the government drop these unnecessarily cruel charges against Chelsea (http://www.freechelsea.com/)

ACLU, LGBT groups ask Obama to approve Chelsea’s clemency request

https://www.chelseamanning.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/London-7.jpg

The American Civil Liberties Union and more than a dozen gay and transgender rights groups are urging President Obama to commute the prison sentence of Chelsea Manning so she can have a chance at a “real, meaningful life.”

“The sole relief that Ms. Manning is seeking is to be released from military prison after serving over six years of confinement — longer than any whistleblower in the history of our country,” representatives from the ACLU and more than a dozen other groups wrote in a letter (http://t.ymlp15.net/wwjeaoaejqejavaueanawuwu/click.php) to Obama on Monday.

“If approved, Ms. Manning will have a first chance to live a real, meaningful life as the person she was born to be.”

December 1, 2016

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be bringing the Chelsea Manning Support Network to an end. We will be transferring the chelseamanning.org domain to representatives of Chelsea Manning on February 1, 2017, for a new website that will launch early in 2017.

We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the many tens of thousands of supporters worldwide who joined together to support this campaign, going all the way back to the days following Chelsea’s arrest in Iraq, June 2010. ... None of us believe that the work is done; however, it’s clear to those that know Chelsea best, that it’s time for a new, and different type of group, to best meet her needs going forward.

Huge news on Chelsea Manning

The Today Show is reporting that Chelsea Manning, who has served 7 years of a 35 year sentence, is on President Obama’s “short list” to be considered for commutation. [1]

This is huge. Chelsea has suffered so much and now we have a real chance to get her released. President Obama could make a decision as early as TODAY. We need to flood the White House with voices calling for Chelsea’s freedom right now.

President Obama Commutes Chelsea's Sentence!!!

Chelsea Manning Support Network
January 17, 2017

“Today’s victory is a victory for all those who stood with Chelsea Manning.”

President Obama has commuted all but four months of the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the former US Army Intelligence Analyst serving 35-years for releasing classified information. Chelsea’s attorney Nancy Hollander, who spoke with President Obama’s counsel earlier today, confirms that “Chelsea will walk out of Fort Leavenworth a free woman in four months, on May 17th.”

The Chelsea Manning Support Network applauds this decision by outgoing President Barack Obama, and extends our heartfelt gratitude. A commutation can not be reversed by a future president.

“Today’s fantastic news goes a long way to making amends for the brutal treatment Chelsea was illegally subjected to while awaiting trial at the Quantico Marine Brig. It’s tragic that Chelsea had to spend 7-years imprisoned for releasing documents that should never have been classified in the first place, and were clearly in the public interest,” stated Chelsea Manning Support Network co-founder Jeff Paterson. “All of us who worked on Chelsea’s behalf are overjoyed.”

The Chelsea Manning Support Network was founded in the weeks following Chelsea’s arrest in Iraq in May 2010. The Network covered 100% of the legal fees associated with her pretrial hearing, court martial trial, and raised a significant amount toward the legal costs of her appeal. Many days during her trial, the courtroom was packed with supporters wearing “truth” shirts.

“Over the last few years, I’ve come to know Chelsea as a deeply intelligent, sensitive woman who doesn’t deserve to spend decades in prison. I often feared that any more time behind bars would be devastating for Chelsea, or potentially even lethal, especially with President-Elect Trump taking office. Soon, she’ll have a chance to live the life she’s been denied for almost seven years,” Rainey Reitman, co-founder of the Chelsea Manning Support Network.

In addition to fundraising, the organization worked to raise awareness of Chelsea’s case. The Support Network held hundreds of rallies around the world, from San Francisco and London. Chelsea’s supporters became regular participants in yearly pride parades the last several years. In addition, the Support Network placed billboards in Los Angeles and Kansas City, ran a full-page New York Times ad, and helped generate over one million petition signatures in support of Chelsea’s release.

"In conversations Chelsea and I had while she was imprisoned, I learned that she’s not only driven by principles, but that she believes in the foundations of America’s government. She dreamed about attending graduate school, and helping to research ways that government could use technology to improve transparency and public participation. Whatever she chooses to do now, the world is better for having a bright young person free to pursue a meaningful life," noted former campaign manager Emma Cape.

“I believe that the support for Chelsea demonstrated that whistleblowers who oppose injustice will not face powerful government retribution alone,” declared Rainey Reitman. “Today’s victory is a victory for all those who stood with Chelsea Manning.”

BREAKING: Chelsea Manning to be released!

Friend, I’m crying tears of joy while I write this.

The White House just announced that the bulk of imprisoned whistleblower Chelsea Manning’s sentence will be commuted. [1]

Chelsea will be free on May 17th. We literally saved her life.

The announcement comes after years of sustained activism on Chelsea’s behalf, and it marks a massive victory for free speech, human rights, and democracy.

A year ago, heck even two weeks ago, any DC insider would have told you that getting Chelsea released was impossible -- that it would never happen.

But time and time again we are proving that when huge numbers of people come together and use the Internet to fight for what we believe in, we can change the rules for what is and isn’t possible in Washington, DC and beyond.

Chelsea’s release sends a message to governments around the world that they cannot act with impunity. It sets a precedent that will benefit so many people. Not just future whistleblowers who expose wrongdoing but all those who suffer when governments are allowed to act without transparency.

There were a lot of different factors that went into making this historic moment possible. Fight for the Future has been at the forefront, helping build public support for Chelsea’s release, collecting hundreds of thousands of petition signatures, and securing headlines to keep Chelsea in the public eye, even while behind bars. [2]

For myself, I’ve been so lucky to become friends with Chelsea over the last year, speaking to her on the phone regularly. But I’ve still never seen her face, or been able to give her a hug.

Today, I’m overjoyed to know that soon she’ll be able to share her beautiful self with the world, and continue on with the rest of her life.

We need to make sure that the story of how Chelsea Manning came to be free is told.

We need everyone to remember that when those in power tell you that something is impossible, it just means you need to fight harder.

We need to remain vigilant. Because the battle for the future of free speech and our basic rights doesn’t end today. Or tomorrow. Or in four years.

It rages on. And I’m honored to fight by your side.

For the future,
-Evan

P.S. We’ve dedicated countless hours to help get Chelsea Manning free. Will you chip in to support our crucial work so we can secure more victories? Chris,

When a new class of high school interns arrives at the World Can't Wait office, one of the first things we do is watch Collateral Murder together. There is no more effective way of situating them in the mission of stopping the crimes of our government.

We talk about what happened in Iraq, and what happened to Chelsea Manning for publicizing that damning footage. While we sat at her trial, we were continually reminded by the US military prosecutors that the exposure in that video of the callous disregard for human life in the way the US occupied Iraq — the war crimes — was the key reason they imprisoned and tortured Chelsea (at that time, Bradley) Manning.

Chelsea is set to get out of the U.S. Military Prison at Ft. Leavenworth today. Take a minute, in honor of Chelsea's courage, to watch and share Collateral Murder.

To mark Chelsea's release, we will send FREE copies of a fully notated DVD of Collateral Murder. (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=4Iovyz1NIUIkPFmMxQOKJtXhidwq4TCG) You can use it in classes, or donate to libraries.

If you want to donate for shipping costs, we appreciate it.

In January when Chelsea's 35 year sentence was commuted after 7 years of imprisonment, revcom.us (http://revcom.us/) noted that "This was, by far, the longest sentence ever given to anyone for leaking documents to the media. Even people who leaked actual military secrets—including General Petraeus—have received sentences of no more than one-to-three years." See: Welcome Manning’s Scheduled Release from Prison (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=XRCX%2FMdlCBZPE82xLMdbv9Xhidwq4TCG) Condemn Her Outrageous Seven-Year Imprisonment (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=9VDAqCA75jksMw1ioJOV%2B9Xhidwq4TCG).

Manning exposed:

• Widespread torture in Iraqi prisons overseen by the U.S. occupiers. “[B]eatings, burnings and lashings surfaced in hundreds of reports... other cases produced accounts of the execution of bound detainees”; the Americans treated these horrors with “the equivalent of an institutional shrug.” (New York Times, 10/22/2010)

• That U.S. officials secretly counted 66,000 civilian deaths as a result of the invasion and occupation, at the same time that the U.S. was publicly giving vastly lower estimates.

• Mass murder from above: Manning released “Collateral Murder ”— video of a U.S. helicopter crew systematically gunning down unarmed and unthreatening Iraqi civilians in the street, including young children, laughing and joking as they did so, puncturing the propaganda about American troops being “the good guys” in Iraq.

Courage to Resist shared today: Lead court martial defense attorney for Chelsea Manning, David Coombs reflects on the case. (http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=jx%2FZm5rq9%2B9mAUgBkZQOXk%2BFwOT7NcZ1)

Chelsea is finally free

Hi. It’s official! Chelsea Manning is free.

Now that she’s been released, she still needs our love and support. Click here to check out the benefit album that we organized. 100% of the proceeds go directly to Chelsea! (http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/6QA/ni0YAA/t.27h/0JFlaA-KQW2jtcSYaNq_0A/h0/Fl3iUu5CoGHA4tXixExvpfd2DC5r64kXUGpnJCE3YT59p8EVDS zuqbb5CNuv4n-2BrpCsntvLmttgHCNOC68MwTjaTF1sON57LeGD5WgoLRLraRvI 4MVGrBVzeiYp9XVFsOyeAGWhhwlBHtYFs9Hi6gVbWKWnfKZrk6 89U3uzyEeq8Grx0Z9VtR3RJECsQxZzAbssnJNT9x7C7uJ4-2BY534Qti4BmR9cyNZ3-2Fn0OF1yHzp0Vz4aJLySnB8mvPiVUHGRbFVQR7DhGgSROmewBg HRRg-3D-3D)

As one of Chelsea’s close friends and supporters, I want to personally thank each and every one of you who ever signed a petition, made a phone call, shared an article, or showed up when Chelsea needed you.

The grassroots movement that we built unquestionably helped save Chelsea’s life, and set a precedent that will benefit so many others. Chelsea’s release is a victory for human rights and the future of freedom of expression.

But she has suffered immensely. Chelsea was imprisoned for 7 years and held in conditions that the UN considers to be torture. She will need time and resources as she adjusts to the free world, and begins her new life.

That’s why I helped organize a surprise “getting out of prison” gift for Chelsea: an online benefit album featuring an exciting lineup of artists including Graham Nash (Crosby Stills & Nash), Against Me!, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Amanda Palmer, Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) Talib Kweli, Kimya Dawson, Ted Leo, and lots more.

Click here to check it out and support Chelsea Manning now that she has been released. 100% of the proceeds from the project will go directly to Chelsea, through a bank account set up by her sister. Plus it’s a great way to show her how much love and support she has from all kinds of people. It’s already sparked great coverage in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Billboard too!

Chelsea’s freedom is a testament to the power of grassroots organizing. It’s a reminder that nothing is impossible.

If music isn’t your thing, you can still help Chelsea by spreading the word on social media. Thanks so much for your support!
