We've seen nu-metal go through, we've sen pop punk. Currently it's the turn of emo to be popular, but what will be next?! As those who've read the EMO thread know, I think prog is the next big scene to be sodomised by the masses, but what will they be like?

First of all, lets establish the big bands. radiohead have been around for a while, but their following will increase. The Mars Volta and Muse will also become very popular, and people will start buying old Yes records like there's no tomorrow (the back catalogue has just been re-released in the UK i believe, just in time for this surge).

Then the clothes. I think it could go any way. Either jackets and cravats and shit, or mad lycra. What's your opinion?

I don't think nu prog will be the next genre bastardized by the masses. It will more likely be indie rock/retro rock, much like Jet(who is exteremely popular right now), alone with other bands such as Rooney, The Redwalls, even the Strokes could fall into this catagory.

Prog is just too weird for most people to get into, it's also much harder to commercialise. The bands listed above are already being put into movies, television shows, commercials, and the sound is much fresher than things such as emo which are all drawing strongly from the grunge sound(start stop and quiet soft dynamics). It's becoming a tired and boring sound without much innovation (although Thrice is a welcome change to the Emo sound).

So yeah, I see people grasping more onto retro rock than prog simply because it's easier and simpler.

I agree, progressive wouldn't really last because the music "industry" can't make that much money off it. Bands like The Mars Volta are incredibly talented in all aspects, abstract, and lyrically beatiful, but theres way too many people out there that wouldn't touch anything that doesn't feature a soi-disant "gangsta" flashing some bling on the cover. I think the next big thing will probably be a hideous mess of rap-rock, only because it's been a while. call me crazy.

The next big thing to get molested by the media is white blues/garage rock blues. The Soledad Brothers are ready to explode, The Black Keys are on a big tour right now, and you can't discredit the world wide phenomenon called The White Stripes (my personal favorite band.)

Also on the prog thing, does anybody listen to Dream Theater, I don't really like prog rock that much but I can listen to Dream Theater in small bursts.

As for fashion, I think Black Panthers t-shirts are gonna get popular, and maybe lots of clothes with buckles.

Hahahahah OK. That site is pretty accurate, but your post is pretty moronic. Oddly enough, most of the commie meatheads round here wanna "liberate" the pikey scum of which you speak.
