View Full Version : So, what to do?

A Very Disappointed Guy

Hello, fellow leftists.

Let me just start out with saying I'm quite new to this place, so please, if I seem overly solemn and dramatic, excuse me. I don't usually fare alot in politics, but the current mentality of the people of the west, have convinced me that there is need for some change. As a person who have always had strong marxist-leanings, the rapid increase in right-wing sympathies the last couple of years, have worried me. It seems that unreasonable nationalism is no longer restricted to a minority anymore, and is spreading fast across the general population of the western countries. This is very worrying, I think, considering that almost every outburst of this "unreasonable nationalism" never has led to any bettering of conditions. Well, the greatest problem is that it is the majority that this nationalism is appealing to, and as we all know, the force that controls the majority, is the force that ultimately controls. I think all of you are very well-versed in politics, so I will not try to discuss the cause of this revival in nationalism. More intelligent people than me has discussed that before, and if it is to be discussed correctly, there must be an entire book dedicated to it. Let me just say that it has a lot to do with xenophobia, predominantly towards arabs, and xenophobia is not very healthy. The most important question for me, is: How do we change this? How do we stop this increase in unhealthy nationalism and conservatism? It is a very difficult question, and a very ambitious one, I know, but I hope that we can get closer to an answer, because it is very important to somehow defeat this current trend.

Society is moving even further away from the non-oppressive society us leftist try to acheive, and this is major problem. But. There is a important thing we need recognize, before we begin to discuss anti-fascist tactics, or whatever we call it, and that thing is: The majority isn't with us anymore. Since the purpose of most left-wing ideologies is to insure that the every person have it nice, more or less, not having the majority with us, is a problem. A very big one. We have to remember that each of us can go to as many communist/socialist/anarchist-gatherings as we want with good intend, but that won't change the opinion of the majority. As I said, us leftists want to fight oppression, and this rise of right-wingers and consvervatives ultimately leads to oppression. A thing I also want to discuss, is a primary socialist-problem, and that is: People seem to have forgotten what socialist ideology is. They seem to view socialists as lazy, naive idiots without backbone, and this is getting strengthed by many of the so-called "socialist" parties in the west. What I am trying to say is that socialists around the world need to do something, and not just sit and strengthen some people's predisposed attitude towards socialists. But I ultimately think that all of leftists, marxists, anarchist or whatever should unite and end this road to oppression. Only then, can we come closer to the society we all want to acheive. So, what to do? I have some ideas, but after all, I am a person of theory, and knows very little of how to implement anything pratically, so I would like to know your proposals first. It is ambitious, but it has to start somewhere. I know there is a million more words to be said about the situation, but I don't have a million words, so I hope I am forgiven.

The only thing we can do to combat the rise of right-wing sympathy/support is to agitate, educate, and organize. Get people's attention, protest, put up flyers, etc, make people interested in what you have to say and then say it, spread class consciousness, strive for a unified left in revolution.
