Protest organizers respond, defend right to speak out against Trump

By staff

Cleveland, OH - Organizers of the major Stop Trump protest, set for July 18, the opening day of the Republican National Convention, received word from City officials July 1 that the applications for a rally and march had been rejected.

Tom Burke, of the Coalition to Stop Trump and March on the RNC stated, We put in for permits more than a month ago, and worked with City staff to make sure they had all the information they needed, now less than three weeks out from the first day of the RNC, we are told that our permits are denied. This is unacceptable. We have a right to protest Trump and his reactionary agenda in the streets of Cleveland.

The communication rejecting the permit application came from Mike McGrath, head of Clevelands Department of Public Safety.

Mick Kelly, also with the Coalition stated, People are coming from around the country to protest Trumps agenda of racist, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim attacks. We are serious about wanting permits, but if we do not get them, we will still march on the RNC.

FBI attempts to question LA activist

By staff

Los Angeles, CA On the morning of July 5, Los Angeles activist Jared Hamil received repeated phone calls from FBI Special Agent A. Brett Fears.

Hamil told Fears that had nothing to say and the agent could contact his lawyer. Hamil has a long history of speaking out against repression and helped to lead the 2012 march on the RNC in Tampa, Florida.

"Agent Fears with the FBI called me three times today, once while I was at work. I made it real clear that I am not going to talk to him or anybody else from the FBI. There's nothing good that can come from talking to them. The FBI has a long history of harassing, intimidating and jailing activists, said Hamil.

Special Agent Fears is based in Tampa. Early this year he tried to question Tampa activist Jessica Schwartz who helps lead the local chapter of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression and has been active in the campaign to defend Palestinian American leader Rasmea Odeh. Schwartz did not cooperate with the FBI.

The attempt to question Hamil comes in the context of stepped-up FBI spying and harassment as the Republican and Democratic conventions approach.

Steff Yorek, of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, states, The FBI is using its powers to try to frighten people away from exercising our First and Fourth Amendment rights at the political conventions like the RNC in Cleveland. It's important for folks to know that the only safe course of action when confronted by an FBI agent is to decline to speak to them.

Opened by Donald Trump in 1990, workers have had to struggle against the pressure of successive bankruptcies. Ownership passed to billionaire hedge fund investor Carl Icahn in 2016. Under Icahns ownership, wages and benefits were cut by 35%, leaving the average employee with less than USD 12 per hour.

Struggling to support their families, workers at the Trump Taj Mahal voted to authorize a strike if they did not receive a fair contract by noon on July 1. The deadline came and went, and contract negotiations failed to reach an agreement that the workers' negotiating committee could recommend to the members.

I was punched by a Trump supporter

Dear MoveOn member,

A Trump supporter belted me in the jaw and knocked me to the ground as I was peacefully protesting outside a Trump campaign event.

My ribs ache. I cant chew. Im all scraped up. But Im still 100% committed to speaking out against Donald Trump's hatred, which is just sickening to my heart.

People ought to know about the kind of violence Donald Trump is stirring up. Media stories just arent painting the full picture. And I didnt really understand it until I experienced it firsthand. We cant let this dangerous man anywhere near our White House.

Will you take one minute to watch my story of being assaulted by a Trump supporterand then share it with your family and friends, so that more and more people see the kind of angry agitation this man is stirring up? (https://act.moveon.org/go/5740?t=1&akid=169816.7761820.xkFvx4) (Not on Facebook? Scroll to the bottom of this email for a link to watch it on YouTube.)

When that Trump supporter hit me, I fell backwards onto my oxygen tank.

(I have something called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, so I carry an oxygen tank and Im hooked up to its tubeseverywhere I go.)

I had to go to the hospital, but Im still glad I stood up to Trump.

So I'm sharing my story, with help from MoveOn, because I now see how much the media is sugar-coating the hatred and violence that's at the heart of the Trump campaign.

Will you take one minute to watch and share my story with your family and friends? (https://act.moveon.org/go/5740?t=3&akid=169816.7761820.xkFvx4) We've just got to keep this man from winning.

Thanks for all you do.

Minneapolis marches against Islamophobia

http://www.fightbacknews.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/article-lead-photo/Stand%20Up%20Against%20Islamophobia.jpg

By Meredith Aby-Keirstead

Minneapolis, MN - Over 250 people rallied and marched through the Cedar-Riverside and Seward neighborhoods Sept.17, showing solidarity and denouncing the hate crimes being committed against Muslims. The protest started at May Day Plaza and included a march to the headquarters of the Republican Party of Minnesota on Franklin Avenue, where they confronted the Islamophobic message of Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate.

Sabry Wazwaz, a Palestinian-American activist with the Minnesota Anti-War Committee, was the first speaker to address the crowd before leading chants on the march route. He spoke out against the U.S. governments use of terrorism as an excuse to attack Muslims at home and abroad. He was inspired by the action and told Fight Back!, Today people of all faiths, color and no faith stood together in solidarity to say no to Islamophobia and racism. It was wonderful and beautiful to see.

Burhan Mohumed, a Somali-American activist with Minnesotans Against Islamophobia, explained the significance of the protest for himself and many of his fellow community members, We can and must confront the climate of fear promoted by the haters like Trump. Coming out to protests, with Muslims and non-Muslims in solidarity, is one of the strongest ways that I can think of to do this. Today I witnessed the power of the people. We marched to together for justice. I feel more inspired and empowered by the people.

Filsan Ibrahim and Aisha Mohamed both spoke to the rally and denounced the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program run by the Department of Justice in Minneapolis. CVE criminalizes and spies on the Somali community in Minnesota and is a classic divide and conquer tactic using trusted individuals and organizations; infiltrators posing as friends, teachers in schools, and social service organizations. Protesters carried signs denouncing CVE and chanted, Hey, hey, ho, ho, CVE has got to go, and See me not CVE.

The march opposed the anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim speech coming from candidates during this election season. Donald Trump was called out by speakers from the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee for his calls for banning Muslims from entering the U.S. and for building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

The Minnesota Anti-War Committee (AWC) organized the march to draw attention to the cost of 15 years of the war on terror at home. Misty Rowan of the AWC explains, We need to stand up against Islamophobia and the governments targeting of our Muslim sisters and brothers as terrorists. As we marched through the Somali-American community, we saw many smiling faces and raised fists from people in cars and on balconies. There was a real feeling solidarity and gratitude from the people who live in the neighborhood.

This protest was part of a national call by Stand Together Against Racism and Islamophobia and was co-sponsored by the Minnesota Anti-War Committee and Minnesotans Against Islamophobia. The march was endorsed by anti-war groups, student organizations, anti-police brutality groups and the St. Paul Federation of Teachers.
