Protest, Saturday, June 18 4 p.m.
Outside the Mexican Consulate, 27 East 39th Street, Manhattan
Solidarity with Mexican Teachers
For the last month, ever since May 15, Mexican teachers of the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE) have been on strike against “reforms” that would gut public education and destroy independent teachers unions. Schools are shut down in the southern states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero. Tens of thousands have marched repeatedly in support of the insurgent teachers. Parents have shown massive support.
Strikers and their supporters are braving repression by the murderous government that massacred and disappeared the 43 Ayotzinapa teachers college students. Clouds of tear gas have not stopped marchers in Chiapas. When the government last weekend arrested top leaders of the CNTE’s militant Section 22 in Oaxaca and attacked protest encampments, barricades went up . When 4,000 gendarmes were dispatched to the state, thousands of teachers and parents blocked their way. When cops attacked in southern Oaxaca early Thursday, the blockades were quickly restored.
Mexican teachers are fighting against policies dictated by the international financial agencies, carried out by the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto, and backed the three main bourgeois parties (PRI-PAN-PRD). In the U.S. the same policies of punitive teacher evaluations, standardized student testing and privatization are pushed by the Democratic Obama administration and top capitalists, including Bill Gates and the owners of Wal-Mart.
The Mexican government has already announced the firing of thousands of these courageous educators. In New York, teacher strikes are prohibited by the Taylor Law. Mexican teachers need our support. Their fight is our fight!
Demonstrate: Stop Repression of Mexican Teachers!
