anybody else like these guys? I think they kick, despite their lack of political message. (I love a good band with a message). what do you all think

very good band.. especially live... the lyrics are maybe not very political or anything, but they have a couple pretty profound lyrics, like "hurt", "ringfinger", i can never have", and "the d"something ay the whole world went away", for instance... their live version of "head like a hole" is extremly good..

the man has a terrible work ethos, takes him 5 years to make a fucking album, but they fucking rule. The Downward Spiral is a piece of musical brilliance and so is Fragile.

La Mer is beautifel.

Trent is a great musician, but his talent is misdirected. His songs focus on the how miserable the world but he never mentions doing anything to change it. In his mind the world is in a "downward spiral" and there is nothing you can do about it. This kind of attitude is counterrevolutionary. Unless he starts getting more political he is ,and will always be, just a piece of bourgeois culture and nothing more.

Oh, I disagree. This form of music reaches out to people and relates to them. I know many people that can appriciate such music and at the same time be leftists.
I think "counterrevolutionary," is a bit extreme. I don't see Reznor as opposing solutions to the problems in his music. He has made some songs that bring up important issues and resist some popularly held ideas that deserve criticism. We need people like this in society, to relate their veiw and uplift others that share the "downward spiral" mentality and maybe move onto the "Fixed" one. There is nothing bourgeois about music that helps oppressed and tormented people cope with thier lives.

The Downward Spiral is about drugs being a downward spiral. The whole album is built around the concept of destroying yourself through drugs.

Song like Hurt and Mr Self Destruction show this perfectly.

what is everyones fav NiN song? Mines Starfuckers Inc!

You know, not everything has to a strong political message. If reznor doesnt make a statement, then he doesnt make a statement, but it doesnt make him "counterrevolutionary." Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake and all those people make no statements whatsoever through their music, but nobody calls them "counterrevolutionary." Why do we always expect those who are a bit more intelligent to make political statements?

And im sure reznor in many ways does care but doesnt want to bring it into his music. Maybe he realizes that his music works better with negativity, which it does. I dont think i would be able to listen to NIN if it was happier, it would be horrible.

And honestly, i think reznor in his own way has challenged a lot of what is wrong with the world. He has challenged ideas of sexuality, drug use, violence, etc. He's been completely honest with how he views these things, even if they are against what society believes.

Favorite songs: something i can never have, terrible lie

exactly, not all the music you listen to, movie you watch, book you read, ect has to have a political message. that would be boring to me.

I love Heretic and Closer. Great songs indeed, and the video for Closer is strangely interesting. I must have watched it 10 times in the past couple days.

Reznor is good, but I can agree: he complains about the world with no solutions offered, which makes him kind of pointless. But the sound NIN produces is amazing and unique. Their videos have a skewed view that make you mull over them, which is GREAT when all the other videos you see are just "pretty" girls gyrating or whatnot. <_< "Perfect Drug" is hands down THE BEST song!! (Even if the chorus is a bit.....dumb.)

so then truthaddict11, what IS the best song?
That IS true, what you said about Rage, but...I don't know. Trent's just whinier. :P

so what? MOST BANDS DO THIS! Did Rage ever tell in a song how to solve a problem? How much can you get out of "Fuck you I wont do what you tell me"? I remember what Jello Biafra said one time about people complaining about how Dead Kennedys did songs complaining and addressing problems but no solutions. He said something along the lines of "The first part of solving a problem is addressing it."

"Perfect Drug" is hands down THE BEST song!! I disagree

i personally love NIN but I am also completely into the industrial/metal/synth-pop scence and there are lots of other great bands out that with similar sounds to NIN. NIN is just the one that came closest to hitting it mainstream.

The reason he hasn't come out with an album lately is because of all the other work he does. he's been working with Marilyn Manson and a couple of other bands and has been doing a lot with his record label.

best song .... hard to say ...he's got some great songs on the Lost Highway soundtrack, his old albums, broken, fixed are amazing ... its really really hard to say .. especailly cause i have some bootlegs cds... i could never choose....its all great

atlanticche....how can gyrating girlies be a good thing? (Good as in positive, nondegrading, not boring/repetitive, etc.) I mean, not to be a flaming feminist, it just seems kinda stupid to have the same-looking girls doing same-looking dance moves in same-looking music videos. Plus it makes us girls feel like shit 'cause we unconsiously compare ourselves. Bah. Sorry, this is a subject I go off on raving tangents on.

yeah just kinda joking, sorry, also though there is that probot video, with constant close ups on Lemmy, sorry, wel it isnt that bad, but yeah all those rap videos with dr. dre and so forth are terrible and behalf of a nation iwe are sorry for the girating

The man takes a while to make his albums doesn't he.

He has the work ethic of sloth, It took him 5 years to make Fragile and 4 to make the Downward Spiral.

I think he is a great, March of The Pigs is a classic song, has one got the live album released a while ago? That stuff was dynamite :D
