View Full Version : Socrates' Test

One day, an acquaintance of Socrates' came up to the wise man and said, "Socrates, there's something I wish to tell you about your best friend!"
Socrates replied, "Before you do, put what you wish to tell me through three tests. The first test is the test of goodness. Is what you wish to tell me about my best friend something good?"
"Well, no. It's quite the opposite, actually," the man answered.
"I see," said Socrates, "The second test is the test of truth. Have you varified the truthfulness of this thing that you wish to tell me?"
"No, actually," the man replied, feeling rather embarassed.
"You've failed the first two tests, but you may still tell me if you pass the third and final test," explained Socrates, "The test of usefulness. Is this thing which you wish to tell me useful?"
"I suppose not. I'm sorry, sir," admitted the man, ashamed.
"Well, then, you wish to tell me something about my best friend which is neither good, nor true, nor useful? I suppose, then, that you shouldn't tell it," Socrates induced.
"You're right, it seems," said the man, before walking away.

.... And that's why Socrates never knew that his best friend was banging his wife.

Is this true?

I guess if you look at it, what 'usefulness' does having your heart broken have?

A lie, or the pain?

I didn't release that Socrate's had a wife. Besides which it may be useful and good to know that your best friend is banging your wife (or husband as the case may be). You might want to join in. And if it's not true, you might want to make it true. 'Cause then you could divorse you wife.

Or maybe it was a joke and a few people are trying to over- analyze it and ruin the joke for the rest of us.

Jeez, can't take a joke! My post was meant as a joke and I did get the joke. And I wasn't trying to over-analyze it at all.

GRRRR!

Damn your lack of a " :P "!

Anyway, sorry for "freaking" on you there. I get confused sometimes as to the seriousness of some statements, due to, as mentioned above, a lack of " :P " .

Oh, thank you ever so kindly. If everybody could just put a damn ':P' when they're joking, at least half of the fights on this board would be avoided.

That would explain why it wasn't useful info, ;)

This is really only on a tangent of Philosophy, somewhere between it and chit chat. Oh well, some topics are hard to define.

comrade neonate, what of buddha? I hate when people write just enough to make you wonder what they are talking about. It's just like what Mohamid said about when you speak...
