So with the new board board software version I think it's time to move forward and switch to a new logo to represent the new age of RevLeft.

So all you Photoshop artists out there, please join the design contest and submit your entry in this thread.

Only specification given is that it should be a PNG with transparent background so we are prepared for upcoming possible board layout changes.

The contest will be open for eight weeks from now or until 10 entries have been submitted.

Afterwards a poll in the CU forum will determine the winner.

Woo, I've been looking for a graphic design project to inspire me since I got my new computer, this gives me a reason to install the necessary programs.

Also, have you thought of using an SVG instead? I believe all modern browsers support them, and they're far smaller while having infinitely better resolution since they're vectors and can be rescaled to any size needed. Doesn't make a difference to me either way, I do logos in vector and then export to whatever format you need.

As far as I know SVG format diesn't support transparent backgrounds so I would prefer PNG.

SVG does support transparency.

Than I wouldn't mind.

Got some ideas going -- unfortunately they're non-serious.... (frown) (grin)

The board needs a logo, not a slogan, people.

I vote for Chris' diagram of what a logo is

Huh -- ?

Which diagram -- ?

As a *logo* -- ? (-- !)

I'd be open to kicking around ideas about what the logo might / should look like....

(Or maybe you mean my *avatar*....)

More on the 'slogan' side of things:

I'm thinking a Rolodex-card-style flip-down of each successive line....

I was hoping you'd make one.

Well it's certainly doable, and I *have* been mulling it over.

But, in line with my 'anti-specialization' political philosophy I'm thinking that perhaps this should be more of a *collective* effort, with raw ideas / brainstorming from several people on the origination side of things, without regard to the doing of it, since I can handle that part appropriately once we have something that's been kicked around a bit.

That said, though, I *will* be a little more pro-active here....

Anyone -- really, *anyone* -- may want to take a moment when it's convenient to *visualize* possibilities for the logo design: What 'feel' should it have -- ? What overall 'look' might be appropriate for the new site -- ? Etc.

I'll admit I'm kind of 'blanking' myself, since the status quo logo is all I know, and I'm used to it, and it works -- but I do keep this logo thing in the back of my mind, and I'd probably benefit from others' brainstorming at this point.

Don't worry at all about 'logistics' -- just consider what you'd *like* to see, if the doing of it was not a consideration whatsoever.

I give my two cents: Much like the current logo, the new logo should represent the basic idea of this place, a common discussion forum for for the whole range of the revolutionary Left. I'm not sure if there is any better way to visualize this than by the anarchy and hammer and sickle logos, so maybe we should just stick with this. Additionally there also could be an element that symbolizes discussion, most of the time this is done by two chat bubbles. But in any case, in such a creative process, I really think it's better to work on a gut level than on a head level. ;)

Okay, cool, this is definitely a start.

What I'm hearing is something along the lines of the 'quote bubbles' as used for the quote sections in the threads' posts -- possibly a left-originating bubble for 'Rev', with a right-originating bubble for 'Left' right underneath it, text-messaging-style.

If this is acceptable then we can think about how to include the 'anarchy' and 'hammer-and-sickle' symbols within this overall 'text-bubbles' style (it's not immediately forthcoming for me).

Also:

- What about that middle symbol, the two-flags one -- ?

- I assume we'd keep the slogan 'Home of the revolutionary left' and the website address -- ?

That is the Antifascist Action symbol. The red and black flag in it are meant to be another visualization of Revleft as a discussion place for both anarchists and communists. I think it's quiet fitting, would be njice to keep it somehow.

The website address really always was a bit redundant, I don't think we need to keep it. I'm ambivalent about the slogan. Maybe create alternative versions with and without it?

Okay, I hear ya -- keep all 3 symbols, then.

Okay, can do -- then the slogan thing is open.

I assume the overall 'text bubbles' style, as I described it, is okay, then -- ?

(I'm trying to get as much done and firmed-up as possible over conversation before doing any graphical work.)

yes, but in the end that's really up to you.

Well, thanks, but we as collectivists shouldn't be doing a website-wide logo by *diktat*.

At this point I think we have something going here, so I'll be getting it together for an initial draft version. Glad you got the ball rolling.

ckaihatsu
12th April 2016, 17:41
Okay, here's an initial draft -- it's purposely crude for the sake of expediency, just to show the basic elements that can / may be included. The process in mind here is to gradually 'refine' all aspects of the logo, like making a statue out of a block of marble.

Note it's 200% (both width and height) of the existing logo -- I'll include a 100% version as we proceed.

Also, I'll throw the following out to everyone as a possible style ('look-and-feel') option -- please comment.
