This ties in with another thread, protecting democratic values only can come through socialization today.

Edward Snowden: ‘we must seize the means of communication’ to protect basic freedoms. Renowned NSA whistleblower calls for ‘radical’ popular action to take control of information technologies.

A gathering of journalists, hackers and whistleblowers in Berlin this weekend heard former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, Edward Snowden, issue a call for citizens to find ways to take direct control over the information technologies we use everyday.

Beware of false prophets.

Reforming things within the system is the ideal, within the system. It’s the way it should work, the way our societies are designed to function.

Snowden also encouraged technologists to “compete directly with these billion dollar corporate interests” like Google, Facebook and Apple. There’s a chance, he said, that citizen-led entrepreneurship could be “more successful, creating products that are just as attractive, more easy to use, but aren’t as dangerous to the individual’s rights to be free and associate in a free and safe way.”

These people do not represent some sort of revolutionary cadre seeking to liberate information. They are tied with small capitalists who have found an attractive means of competing with the dominant technology companies. Similar to the way the "buy local" movement was used by small time farmers and retailers to appeal to liberal sensibilities as a means of competing with large chains such as Walmart and the like.

It might be helpful to remember that Edward Snowden is a Libertarian. His usefulness to us as communists has passed, he has no more data to leak or at least none that he is willing to leak due to his lingering nationalist convictions. Now he must market himself in order to make a living just like the rest of us. Time to move on and stop listening to his infomercials.

Is Snowden becoming more radical?
