Good to see that the regime in Cuba is now allowing it's citizens to listen to rock n roll, as it used to persecute them for it.
I'm also glad that the concert in Havana is free, as the Stones normally charge so much and wages in Cuba are so low that they would be otherwise unable to afford it.
I just wonder how much, if any, merchandise the average Cuban will be able to afford.

interesting report
Fidel Castro banned rock music in 1961 as being a corrupting American influence that had no place in the new Communist Cuba (ironically at odds with Marx's own liberal views on art and culture, not to mention the fact that many rock groups have espoused "left-wing" ideas). The ban was eventually lifted in 1966, but rock music adherents were still marginalized by the Communist establishment and looked upon with suspicion as "counter-revolutionaries"

They have my sympathies. No socialist country should be subjected to the pernicious influence of mediocre music from bands long past their prime.
In all seriousness, this seems like a placebo to chase the bitter pill of liberal reform.

Yeah, half a century ago.
You must not have heard of concerts featuring Audioslave, Juanes, a festival celebrating the Beatles in 2000, and visits by rock legends Robert Plant & Jimmy Page. Not to mention the numerous rock bands from Cuba that were tolerated in the 50's and 60's and thrived since that time.

Thanks for the link, you don't mean to tell me there was/is a conflict between Marx's ideas and Cuban "socialism"?

It's all a matter of taste, they were a bit before my time, but yep, I feel sorry for the Cubans for many reasons.
But playing gigs in Cuba is problamatic, I mean very few of them can either a) afford the ticket prices (if any) or b) afford any merchandise.
But the Idler does raise an interesting point, about what Marx wrote about culture, surely the working class are able to decide from themselves, under socialism, what they enjoy? Artists that don't entertain would surely give up and try something else?

The pressing issues of our time. We often hear about the Cuban health system, but what we really want to know is can they afford to buy an overpriced Rolling Stones t-shirt?

Well we all know of one Cuban family that can afford them? ;)
...and a whole lot more besides! Fill in the blanks! C_s_r_'s!
As for the rest of the poor saps, $16 a month, yes a month, does not go very far, even on Cuba.

Come now, I'm sure some U.S.-backed Cuban exiles could afford them.

In 1989, David Hasslehof defeated Stalinism single-handedly and destroyed the Berlin Wall armed only with the power of his perm.
His perm. Perm, I said perm.
Now in stunning reversal, the power of Fidel's Beard has converted the Rolling Stones to Marxist-Leninism.

You seem to be burdening under the illusion that I support Cuba, I don't.
Also do you have trouble following conversations?
You: "Casto can afford to buy a t-shirt!"
Me: "That's not surprising, heads of state are highly paid individuals."
You: "Cause some are more equal than others!"
What the fuck are you smoking? Are you just daft? Maybe I should just reply in kind with: "Trees are green!", "Water is wet!" or "PikSmeet is a try-hard, piss-poor troll."
