We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives.
Okay it's not by Lincoln but what do you think? How will our era be viewed by historians?

After arriving on a desolate resource stripped planet, an alien steps on a half burnt picture of Donald Trump and immediately shivers without knowing why.

Maybe as we view the Roman Empire (though a finalist one) - a brutal empire that lived in luxury, a high pace of technological improvement, nice art...

It's one of those quotes that sounds deceptively "deep sounding", but upon closer analysis is just some bullshit. We are dealing with the same basic existential issues that mankind has always dealt with, there's really no difference in that respect
There are also major challenges in the modern era which are just as serious (if not moreso) than anything humans have faced in the past

The quote is mostly a primer for the second question.

While what you saw is true, this century is kinda boring in terms of major events compared to the previous one don't you think? But it's still early.

Our era will primarily be viewed through the lens of Fight Club.
That's right, the novel will be retroactively labelled as documentary writing and be considered as the foremost document expounding on the conditions of life of service sector and non-managerial administrative workers. Boring drudgery, not really that physically demanding, and overall lack of social cohesion in the form of grand ideological super-goals which could serve as a factor of binding people together on a large scale.
On a more serious note, I'd bet that future historians might focus on some specific aspects. The global war on terror with the complementary military and surveillance developments within state apparatuses, geopolitical instability, resurfacing of the crisis of capital and the working class, in conjunction with the shifting patterns of employment and conditions of work.
